The managers of the big rivals_ ‘appear to realize that the situii-i tlon is a. critical one. In their eleventh hour statements there is ls. very noticeable undercurrent of- uncertailnty. The assurance which ‘marked their predictions of victory n month ego is lacking. Judge Rockwell McAdoo's man- ager. undoubtedly has a majority, of delegates pledged to vote for his man, even though their number is variously estimated and the Rockwell tabulation differs widely from that of Tammany. However, it requires a two-thirds vote to nomina-te under the present rules of the Democratic party. The Smith forces are credited with enough delegates to prevent Mc- Adoo from getting the necesary two-thirds vote and they declare that when the convention has be- come convinced that McAdotfs nomination is impossible they can swing it to the New York man. A mouth ago Rockwell was pre- dicting that McAdoo would be noni- inated on the tliird ballot. He now admits that his nian will wiii the prize only after n long bat-tie. The disclosure during the Senate oil investigation that McAdoo since his retirement. from public office had been legal adviser for one of the oil “barons" who figured in the inquiry undoubtedly alienated many prominent Democrats from his candidacy and a. familiar de- claration in political discussions is that McAdoo cannot be nominated because with hini its standard bear- er the Democrats-s could not win. The linking of McAdods name with tho oii scandal iindobiiteilly gave additional strength to Slmiih,i but some of the leaders of the Smith faction appear to be rather less confident than formerly as the delegates gather for the conven- tion. They maintain that they can block the McAdoo forces, but their optimism regarding their ability to swing the convention to the New York governor appears to be wear- lair a bit thin. From both camps there contin- ues to come of course, the cus- tomary predictions of victory, but to the neutral observer there are many indications that both sides are in reality much in doubt as to the mbtcome. There is no lack of available candidates. The difficulty in the event of a deadlock will be find- ing the men upon whom the con- tending factions can agree as a compromise. There is a formid- able iist.of "favorite sons" and others who are practically sure to receive some votes in the first bsl- lot. Prominent in this list, which very probably contains the ame of the coming Democratic nominee, are the following:- Beiistor Ososr W. Underwood, of Alabama. Senator Joe 1‘. Robinson, of ‘ti. anus. Homer B. Oammioal. of connec- irig to accept, or whose friends' have advanced them as potcntinil nominees, and who may or mayl not be heard from before the vot- ing is over. But most likely they will not, and if it is not McAdoo or Smith it will in all probability lbe one of the dark horsese inciud-l ’ ed in the foregoing list. I Prominciitiy mentioned in the] gossip of the convention eve is- Governor Albert G. Ritchie, of‘ Maryland, Governor Ritchie, l tlirougiiou-t the lire-convention cain-' H i» E . b Charlottetown, 4 paign was regarded only casually outside of his own state, but he now iooilis as a possible factor in the nomination. The convention gossip mongers have it that he is the second string man of the Mc- Adoo faction. McAiloo’s chief fin- ancial backer is Bernard M. Bar- uch, the New York bauker. and whether rightly or wrongly he has been labelled the choice of Wall Street. It is asserted tlic “big bus- iness" men or the Democratic party are trying to put hiin over on the theory that as President he would he "safe and sane” from the point of view of the financial interests. in they fail, it is declared they hope to find an acceptable substit- ute in Governor Ritchie. in New York Ritchie is regarded as a "big business" man. At home in Mary- land he is famous as being the only governor Maryland hiis re-vlovtei lie is a "conservative" and at poarsnce, and is a first class cam- palgner. in the other camp gossip names The Indiana senator undoubtedly has an advantage over the major, iiy of the other dark horses. His‘ manager, Thomas Taggsrt, nn ns-. tiite political worker, ran a pre-' convention campaign for him upon rather novel lines. From the start Taggiirt banked on a deadlock in the convention. lie ilevotoil his main energies in pledging deleg- ates lo vote for Raistoii as second choice. Taggart recently was ro-- porvloii to have joined the Smith forces, iinii, according to current‘ report, will throw his influence in‘ the convention to the New York candidate, although at one time he: declared Smith was impossible. But. if it becomes apparent that Emit/h cannot be put over, it is a fair supposition that the majority of the Smith leaders will recipro- cate by boosting Taggarfs man. But not all of them. Even be- fore the deadlock stage is reached it may be impossible for Norman i0. Mack who will act as‘ ,. itesmau for the New York delegation, to keep his 90 delegates solidly in line for Smith, Senator Copeland has a minority following in Tam- many and if he decides to put him- self forward he may canine no lit- tle trouble. Copeland there- forc may prove a factor in the De- mocrute deal, though there is little expectation that he will get within roach of the nomination himself. Senator Underwood occupies a favorable position among the dark iiorsesc by reason of s. vigorous lire-convention campaign. This, while it failed to gain him many plt-ilgeii delegates. focussed atten- itiou upon his liudisputable excell- oiii qualities and brought him fav- rnbie mention from a number 6f the "conservative" leaders of the lie has a fine political re- cord and would make is strong fliiiitlliifllf‘.
