ENIHUSIASIIG GNNSERVATII IIitnniiitin -i____.\.---*- A very largely attended public meet-` ing ill the interests of the Liberal- Conservative candidates was held in the Auditorium at Molitague last even- ing. Tile chair was occupied by Mr Norman McDonald and on the platform were Holi. Premier Mathleson, Holi. .lolln McLean, lion. J. A. McI)ollald, lion. Murdock McKinnon, Mr Donald Nicholson, M.P.. and Mr A, L. Fraser. lion. Mr McDonald was the first speak- er. He reviewed the financial position of the province now, compared with conditions in which the Government found them. The Government, instead of being insolvent and going deeper and deeper into debt every year, was now ilot only maintaining the public services efficiently but was reducing the public debt, having reduced it by $89,000 in three years. The conditions of the two Governments, at present and during the regime of the former, were exactly similar when they made a call upon the Dominion Government for increased subsidy. The Liberals were in power locally and at Ottawa. in the same way as the Conservatives to-day; yet, whereas the local Liberal Government had found no sympathy in support of their claims against the Dominion, no sooner did the deputa- tion from the present Government present its cade at Ottawa than it re- turned with $100,000. That sllould convey to them tllat there was some- thing radically different bctwccn thc methods of the two governments. llo had been a member of the Legislature when the present Government was in Opposition, and year after year they pleaded with their opponents to pre- esnt their claims to Ottawa, when they CONDENSED ADS. The present tioverillnellt succeeded where their predecessors failed and where they admitted they had tailed. Mr McDonald proceeded to reply to criticisms levelled against the Govern- ment for its administration of the Road Act, ami showed tilat 3,014 more people had paid thc road tax ill the present regime than in 1911, ami 6,000 more horses had been taxed. Was it ilot the case tllat under the old regime there was a great deal of favonritlsln, through which -thc friends of the Gov- ernment escaped payment ot’ just and lawful taxes? Mr McDouahl referred to the high cfilclcncy of the public ser- vicesnini especially complimented the portfolio melnbers of thc Government for their invaluable services. Under the old regime the Commissioner of Agriculture would be found five out of Agriculture would be found five days out of six at Atherton or Iiiileford and the orlicc was left to take care of it- self. Similarly with the office of Premier and Attorney General. The previous holders of these offices were not paid an adequate salary and the consequence was they didn‘t do thc work. Past Attorney-tleneral drew as inuch as five thousand dollars, or five times their salary for services render- ed the l)ominlon Government. Tllat lacing the case, could they wonder, when the Attorney-General presented a claim t.o his masters at Ottawa on behalf of his masters in Prince Edward island, tllut Prince Edward Island got thc worst of lt? Now they had it (‘oln- niissioner of Agriculture ami a Com- missioner of Public Works who were six days oi' thc wcck In thcil' offices, or if they wi-rc not there they were out oil (lovcrnmcnt business. Similar- ly witll thc Attorney-General alld l’rciniel', who was to he foilnd in all business hours, aint even ollt of busi- ness hours, busy at \vork in the in- terests of the province. Never before had a premier devoted so much time and ability to the province, and of course none of his predecessors had such a record to his credit. All that was left ot' the old Liberal party was the Patriot, its editor and one or two of his friends; and of all the lncall. petty criticisms lodged by it against thc Govcrnlncnt. the most mean alld contclnptiblc was that ioilgcil against thc Prelnier ill regard to his salary. There was no lnan who knew tho work that Prclnicr Matllieson had done hilt lccogliised that ills increase was not llli increase in the ordililiry sense, but a saving, for by his ability, work and devotion to lhc interests of tho pro- vince at large hc hail more than saved his salary. All thc criticlslns came from thc snmc source, and they must. remember that the editor of the Pat- riot himself had drawn $1,900 from the l`)olnillion Government for which he had rendered no services. No doubt ills anxiety to get ills friends back into power was in order that he should get back his siliecure. lion. Murdock McKinnon in a brief and effective speech outlined what ills Department had done for agriculture during the three odd years he luis been in office, and also compared the state of education now with what it was in the old days of their predecessors. showing the marked improvements all along the line. Premier Mnthieson was given a rousing reception on arising to address the meeting, slid in a vigorous speech he reviewed the record of his Govern- ment and answered the criticisms levelled against it. He reminded them tllat when they were in opposition they insisted upon their claims against the Dominion being brought before the powers at Ottawa. but they were met with the retort that our claims were merely political kite flying. When the present Government was returned they took it at that. but they were not satisfied to leave it at that. They prepared their case carefully, went to Ottawa and were met in the first in- stance with the reply that their pre- decessors had had an opportunity of piltting forth their claim and had failed to take advantage of it. so that the door was closed against them.
