GUARDIAN rnoso S'side Town Council To Purchase Office Machines With Mayor Currie and-all coun- cillors present, the Sumrnerside Town Council last night held its regular monthly meeting in the town building. Councillor Maccsusland moved a resoluiton that the town pur- chase and electrical calculating machine with typewriter keys from the National Cash Regiate Com- pany at a price of 37,085.00 and also an addressograph machine from the Addressograph Multi- grsph Company at a price of 5,160.38. Councillor MacCausland pointed out that the time has come to make these purchases which the town auditors have recom- mended in their yearly reports. He also said that if the mach- ines were not purchased the town would be faced with the necessity of hiring ,additlonal help in the Town Clerk's office. The fact that the purchase of these mach- ines will enable the Town Clerk to have a system that will save the town several thousands of dollars yearly in bank overdraft interest alone. will facilitate billings for all town departments without loss of time was taken into consideration by the council members. The matter oi this purchase, he said. had been under advise- ment for some months and given full consideration. , On motion it was decided by the meeting to purchase the machines. ELECTRIC LIGHT CALLS Reporting for the Electric Light Department. Councillor Clark said that the linesmen of the department receive many calls from householders to make repairs when there is a power fail- ure in the home and that in many cases it is just a matter of a burned out fuse that had caused the trouble. He said that when the trouble was caused by such rea- sons that the calls would be charg- ed to the househoder. The Town M pointed out that the town contracts to bring power only as far as the meter and that no employee of the town should under any circumstances be expected to go beyond the meter to ascertain any electgical trouble in a household. Councillor Newson reporting for his committee said that the work at the Civic Auditorium had been completed on the grounds adjoin- ing the building. that the floor in the stadium had been repaired and the stadium painted and that it was in readiness for the Lobster Carnival. He said that a cltl son of the town was interested in yurchasing the Maclnnls property at the west end of the town and that since the town had no use for the house that it take under consideration the selling of it. it was decided that the property. be advertised to the public as being for sale. Councillor Newson said that the town patrol is showing'a greater amount of mileage than he felt was justified. ' Councillor Newson said that he knew of two occasions when the patrol had been seen on Linklctter Road and this was in his opinion not in its territority. Councillor Jenkins said that he would investigate the matter fur- ther regarding this point and re- port back at a later meeting. Much discussion was given to the matter of an accident which happened to the patrol wagon at the corner of Spring and Fitzroy Streets at some time in the past. According to the report handed in by Officer Maclflnnon. who had been driving the patrol at the time. the undcrpart of the car had been damaged by ooning list contact with s manhole cover at that point. The officers report claim- ed also that the nude art of th e car had been damag on previous occasions when it had been in con- tact with driveways and curbs. Councillor Jenkins said he did not think that the patrol car was at all suitable in the first place as it did not have sufficient road clearance. Councillor Maccausland said that in his opinion the officer con- cerned should be condemned or demoted because he had not re- ported the accident at the time it ” the ad- visability of a trade in for the pre- sent patrol car for a suitable pan- el delivery model. Town Manager Joseph Brophey pointed out that since the patrol car was a late model Job the trade in value would be high and the ex- change could be made with very little expense to the town. He said he felt that a proper police petrol would be more suitable in many ways than the present car used by the Police Department. Councillor Clark moved that the town allow its permanent employ- ees six days a year without loss oi pay. All permanent employees may accumulate one sick day a year that they have worked down to a maximum of 23 days. if an em- ployee ls sick over twenty eight days the committee will con- aider the case on its merits. Mr. R.'r. Holman was on motion appointed a trustee of the summer- side School Board. This appoint- ment is for a period of three years and will expire in 1960.
