He d through Pleasantville al 11.3 passe througn easantville about JU o'clock. Half an hour later the explosion was heard. A party left at once for the magazine. 4 At the place where it had stood they found s great cavity in the hillside, and just in front of this where the team had stopped with the load was another hole twenty feet quare and ten deep. Not the slightest trace of Haggerty was found. About two red ya few small bits of horse flesh were p eee up, but not another vestige of the , driver or magazine re- mained. Haggarty was an experienced driver, and it is thought that rough roads caused the disaster, although another theory of the ex- plosion is that in unloading the nitro- glycerine Haggerty dropped one of the cans. A schoolhouse about a quarter of a mile from the magazine was completely wrecked and the dwelling house of a man named Gutshaw was shaken to pieces, and Mrs, Gutshaw, who was looking out of the win- dow, was fatally injured by-flying debris. rocks, and earth were hurled in all directions. Charges against the police were repeated and the fail- ure attributed to the fact that they were in- different or hostile. Mayor McKenzie, who presided, made a speech at the close, saying he had always believed the Town Council should enforce the Act, and that no Council- lor, true to his oath of cffice, could-do other than treat the Scott Act the same as other laws, Some of the speakers appealed to the electors not to vote for candidates for the Council other than those favorable to the en- forcement of the Act by the town, and it is likely the next civic election will be run on that issue. wants } the history of } = regret to learn that John McLean, 1M.
