Page 4 Message from the Editor Welcome back UPEI students to another semester of The Gem! Hope you all had a great holiday. I would like to thank those of you who contributed to The Gem last semester by submit- ting something, helping at layout night, or doing the many other little jobs there are to do. I would especially like to thank our regu- lar staff and volunteers, those of you who help in some way every week. We couldn’t do it with- out your help! I am hoping that all of you will join us again this semester, along with a few new people we know you’re out there! For those of you who have not submitted anything to The Gem, why not take a half hour or so a week and drop something into the ole submissions slot or mail it to vax account GEM? Write abut something which is going on at UPEI (or any other university), write a poem, submit something to our letters column, sketch a cartoon, or design a front: cover. These are just a few ides to get you started. Layout night is every Tuesday at around 7:00pm. For those of you who haven’t dropped in yet our office is in the basement of Main building (near the pop ma- chine). As an added bonus for helping at layout, we’ll provide you with delicious food from Fa- ther’s absolutely free. See the ed- itor for more details. I'd just like to remind all you submitters that the deadline is Monday at 3:00. Any submis- sions which come in after this time can, and probably will be re- jected for that issue. There are. still several posi- tions to be filled at the Gem, such as sports editors and writers, con- test committee, graphics editor, and many more. If you have any ideas or suggestions feel free to let us know. We may not be able to try all of them but we’ll give it a good effort. I would also like to point out that we reserve the right to limit submissions. In other words, not every submission will get in a par- ticular issue because of space lim- itations. The society has planned a number of interest- ing events including a food drive for the Upper Room, snow sculp- tures, snow golf, and much more. Last year’s food drive was able to provide more than a ton of non-perishable goods for the Upper Room and with your help they plan to exceed that figure. Your support would make a great difference to those people who de- pend on the Upper Room, so be prepared to give what you can. National Engineering Week is annually celebrated at all univer- sities in Canada which provide programs in engineering. Each university celebrates the week in it’s own way, by arranging trips to other Engineering departments at other universities, by provid- ing public exhibits of projects, as well as many other activities.
