The recent death of Miss Aane Reeve Aldrich will be learned with regret by many people who admired her verses. In a recent number of Lippincott’s was pub- lished a pvem which attracted a great deal of favorable notice, and which we produce for the benefit of our readers : MY PERSIAN PRAYER-RUG, Made smooth some centuries ago By praying eastern devotees, Blurred by those dusky naked feet, And somewhat worn by shuffling knees, In Ispahan., t lies upon my modern floor And no one prays there any more. It never felt the worldly tread Of smart bottines, high-heeled and red, In Ispahan, And no one prays there now, I said ? Ah, well, that was a hasty word. Once with my face upon its wocf, A fiercer prayer it never heard In Ispahan. But still I live who prayed that night That death might come ere came the light. Did any soul, in black despair, Breathe, crouching there, that reckless prayer in Ispahan ? Perhaps. I trust that Heaven lent A kinder ear to him than me, If some brown sufferer, weeping, begged To have his wretched soul set free, In Ispahan, I fancy I shall like to meet The dead who prayed here and whose feet Wore this rich carpet dim and frayed. Peace to your souls, O, frie.ds, who prayed In Ispahan. oe What the Engtich Papers Say About Gladstone's Gain. The Standard says: If the Gladstonians cannot be prevented from returning to office, they may yet be prevented from re- turning to power. Mr. Gladstone with a nominal majority of thirty would be in an embarrassed and hopeless position that no head of the Cabinet could occupy. He would not be able to maintain his position in the House of Commons for a month. If he tried to palter with his promises to the Irish he would at once lose eighty votes, placing him in a minority of fifty, if the [rish abstained from voting, and of one hundred and fifty if they voted against him. If he brought in his Home Rale bill, unless it contained everything that Parnell demanded, the Parnellites and anti-Par- nellites would immediately compete in ostentatious dissatisfaction with the measure. If the bill conferred upon the Irish Parliament uncontrollei power, a number of his English and Scotch adherents would desert him. The Pall Mall Gazette says: From the point of view of producing a Gladstonian majority, the results of the polling are suf- ficient, but with the view to making a large majority they will not do. While it looks as if Lord Salisbury is doomed, Mr. Glad- stone’s majority will not be as large as many hoped it would be. Thr Chronicle warns Gladstone that the advanced Radicals will not be fobbed off with a Whig Government packed with ami- able derelicts from his earlier governments, and pledged to nething but Irish Home Rule, which the House of Lords wil! reject with contempt. eet The St. Lawrence Smugglers. The scene of the difficulty between the revenue cutters and smugglers was on the north shore of the Lower St. Lawrence, in the vicinity of Godbout, and only a few miles from Pointe des Monts, and that so far nota single shot has been fired. The last reliable news that reached Quebec was that the Alert, with the gun and detach- ment of **B” Battery on board, had met the Constance down the river on her way up for reinforcement, and had transhipped the men on board the cutter. The latter returned in the direction of Godbout to look for the enemy, and the Alert wheeled about on her way back. The smuggler bold, with whom the Constance has had her little dificulty, is supposed to be a man named Bouchard, belonging to Isle aux Coudres, who is one of the most practi- cal smugglers in the Lower St. Law- rence. He has had other difficulties with the customs authorities and more than one schooner commsnded by him have beea seized for contravention of the customs. Nothing is known of the schooner now in question, beyond the fact that she is a valuable prize, naving a cargo of smuggied liquors on board valued at from $10,000 to $15,000. The Constance came up with hec on Thursday and challenged her. Capt. May ordered her to alt until she was searched. A defiant reply was returned that the schooner would not submit to be boarded by strangers, except over the dead bodies of her crew. It is later learned that the transhipment}of the B Battery detachment from the Alert to the Coastance was effected on Saturday last aear the mouth of Trinity river, and that while endeavoring to meet the Alert the cruiser lost sight of the belligerent smugglers, who were challenged on the Thursday re vious, but set Cept. May and his men at efi- ance. Under cover of the darkness on Friday night the smuggling schooner, which is said to be of 99 tons burden, slipped out of the way and is supposed to have proceeded sea- wards. The True Siberia. ‘* Dense swarms of mosquitoes attack the inhabitants during the summer, night and iay, and deaths have occurred from their bites.” The natives do not slaughter cattle, and are exceedingly poor, ‘‘ the staple food being a sort of cake made of fir tree bark powdered very fine.” Blocks of solid ice are used as window-panes in the houses during winter, ‘** Ap idea of the lowness of the temperature msy be gained by the fact that, notwithstanding the heat inside the hut, these seldom melt till the return of spring ” Now, among these natives who have nothing to sell, and in these not very warm huts, political exiles are living under cir- cumstances which make their existence harder than that of a native. In Sredne- Kelymsk, for example, a place which is hundreds of miles fartber north than the town of Yakoutsk, there were, in all, only sixty ‘*houses,” in sone of which two families of natives, together with their dogs and cattle, were already crowded, when about twenty-five *‘politicals” were sent there. This was quite an invasion, and one can easily understand the anxicties and miseries caused by the scarcity of dwellings. imagine now these male and female students of diff-rent universities, young doctors, professional nurses, .ech- nical engineers, literary men, and even school boys of sixteen to seventeen, on a frosty day, barehanded, patching up their huts with clay and snow or cut- ting ice blocks, two hundred pounds in weight each, for their windows, or fishing in icy water. In summer, when a great deal of other work is done, they are obliged to carry everything om their shoulders, as Sredne-Kolymsk does not possess even a wheelbarrow. Again, consider the food question. A native can easily live on putrid tish for months, but a European needs bread and some variety in food. Now let me quote a letter received some time ago from one of the political exiles in Sredne-Kolymsk. He thus describes his daily menu during two months :— ‘‘Durning March and April our food con sisted exclusively of rations of bad meat. The meat was boiled in water, and taken without any vegetables, sauce, or anything else to make it eatable. The microscopic slice of bad rye bread given pe man only awoke an insupportable longing for more. After having eaten such a would-be dinner in our common Jining-room, every one of us took home a emall piece of the same meat, wrapped in a little rag, and another microscopic slice} of bread. “That was for eupper and for break} fast next morning. But, as we were awfu'ly hungry, the meat and bread were eaten up immediately after reaching home, and then we had for our sole food, or rather driak, in the evening and next morning, the detestable cake-tea, without anything else to fill our stomachs.”—F. Volkhovsky, in the Con- temporary Review. Sir John Had Dined, (From Spare Moments ) A young shorthand writer was once told to report a speech by Sir John Macdonald. Now it happened that the Canadian Pre- mier had come to the House from a dinner party, ard his speech in matter and form was of a decidedly post-prandial character, The youthful reporter, however, could not believe it possible that Sir John should waut editing, and took down every word. Gis editor, on seeing the copy, told him it would not do, and as it was not wanted for the next morning he was advised to go aad see Sir John and get him to correct it. The reporter, on being shown in, found Sir John, as usual, exceedingly affable. Har- ing explained the object of his visit, the reporter was desired to read his notes aloud. This he did, while Sir John lay on 4 sofa listening with a face of extreme solemnity to his own incoherences and correcting them as occasion required. When the notes were finished the Premier rose, laid his hand on the young man’s shoulder, and began in the most fatherly of tones ; *] see exactly what has happened. Now, my dear young friend, Iam an old man and you are a young one, and you will not mind if I give you a piece of advice. It is this : Never attempt to report a speech unless you are perfectly sure that you are sober.” With this Sir John bowed out his visitor. re To cain the public confidence is essential to business success, and it can only be gained by a steady course of faithful dealing with them. It is by this course that Messrs. Tuckett & Son have secured the great success ot their ‘‘Myrtle Navy” tobacco. This con- fidence is not only a source of business to the firm, but also a source of economy which the consumers get the benefit of. The merchant never loses a moment of time in examining the quality of the tobacco, The name fixes the quality as absolutely as the mint stamp fixes the value of the guinea. It is pot even necessary for the commercial! traveller's trunk to be burdened with a sample of “Myrtle Navy.” Allhis customers know what it is, and know in an instant when it has been supplied. There is no room for any dispute ahout it. No waste of time or postage in writing complaints about it. These msy look look like trifles to the uninitiated, but they save money, and enable merchants to perform the work of distribution at the smallest possible cost. They are part of the reasons why the finest quality of tobacco grown o be sold at so cheap a price. e080 SKODA’S DISCOVERY reat the German-American Blood. Guaranice eontract with every bottle.
