Horees will form strong attachme> for dogs, but it dces not often hap -= that a horse derives any reai be from having a canine friend. The i owing case will show thata dog may | sometimes return a horse’s affection in | @ very practical mauner: A man living | in the country had a horse which bap- | pened to be turned out just as bis car- rots were ready for pulling. He also had a dog that was on the best of terms with the borgse. One day he noticed that | his carrots were disappearing very fast, | but be was almost certain tkat no one | had got in and stolenthem. Still he | determined to watch and see who was robbing him. His vigilance was reward- | ed, for he caught the thief in the vers | act of pulling up the carrots. Then he ‘ cautiously followed him from the gar- | den and found that he went off in the direction of the field where the horse was. Arrived there, the owner of the carrots saw that his horse was the re- ceiver of his stolen goods, The thief was his dog. In some way the dog had discovered that the horse had a partiality for car- rots and was unable to gratify ite taste, but with a eagacity that is almost in- credible the dog found the means of ob- | taining the succulent morsels for his friend, and this he did without scruple at his master’s expense. There was something more than instinct in this dog’s head. But any one who takes real notice of the habits and curious doings of animals must inevitably come to the conclusion that the theory is not tena- ble which maintains that animals can- not think and reason.—Detroit Free Press. ee oe ! Sweets In Queen Bess’ Times. During the Elizabethan period there grew up in England a great national liking for sweet things. Not merely was this seen in the general taste for sugar confiture, but it was manifested in the general demand for sweet wines, the rich sherries, the charneco, the sack, the sugary almond flavored sack posses and other drinks of the same class. In drinking, asin eating, the increase of appetite for sugar grew by what it fed on. Though not a sweetmess in tho strict sense of the term, sack posset #0 largely represented the taste of cbat time for sweetness and flavor that the recipe of Sir Fleetwood Shepherd, given by Mr. Howard Staunton in his Shakes- peare notes, is worth quoting: “To make a sack posset take 3 quarts of pure good cream and a guar- ter of a pound of the best almonds. Stamp them in the cream and boil with amber and musk therein. Then take a pint of sack in a basin and set itona chafing dish till it be blood warm. Then take the yolks of 12 eggs, with 4 of their whites, and beat, them well to- gether, and so put the eggs into the sack. Then stir all together over the coals till itis as thick as you would have it. If you now take some amber and musk and grind the same quite small with sugar and strew this on top of your posset, 1 promise you that it shall have a most delicate and pleasant taste.’’ There was another mixture cf the same class called ‘‘rambooz,’’ made of exes, ale, wine and sugar. —Geatle- man’s Magazine. - Write to-day fora free copy of our ae Hock on Patents.
