ce LL LO ALLL ee al SUT GE es a LEO 7 THe Dairy EXAMINER, MAY 26, 1881. ananee SS ecard The Irish Question in Bagiand. Ir is reported that in one of his latest speeches Lord Salisbury, the new leader of the Opposition, characterized the Irish Land Bill as ‘an ebullition of Communism too contemptible and ridi- culous to be seriously discussed. If this report be true, aud if the noble Lord was serious when he made this slashing comment, the fate of the Land Bill is, for the present, sealed. What follows? In moving its secoud reading, Mr. Glad- stone declared that his Government would stand or fall by the Bill; and if it be thrown out by the Lords, a disso- lution and an appeal to the country will, of course, be the result. Lord Salisbury is a bold man; and to force a dissolution on the ministry with its overwhelming majority will be a stroke of policy worthy a bold leader. Yet it may not be arash one. A large number of the supporters of the minis- try in the House of Commons were elected by very narrow majorities. A slight reaction may, therefore, produce a very different result on an appeal to the ils. The recent by-elections seem to indicate that the reaction has taken place ; for the Conservative candidates have been returned by decidediy increased majorities. At any rate it might be easier for the Conservative Leader to win a victory now than it would be after the Government have passed a new Franchise Bill, making a redistri- bution of seats in the Commons and giv- ing the right to vote to large classes who are uot now in possession of it. _———- «<».- = + ——— A Blasted Hope. It has been a favorite ery with the | Grit Party for a long time past, that the | Mesers Archibald & Co., propricters ef the | ejected jfrom her Government dare not open a seat in Nova | Scotia; aud wheo Sir William Young tendered his resignation as Chief Justice, they considered their opportunity had arrived. Various were the rumors as to the manner in which the vacancy would be tilled; and dismay filled their camp, when it was discovered that Hon, James | Macdonald, long recognized asthe Leader of the Bar in his native Province, had been appointed. They live on rumors. They know | that they have no earthly chance in aj contest, and so they s‘imulate themselves by reporting imagivary troubles and dis- sensions in the Government ranks, Con- sequent upon the vacancy thus created, a re-arrangement took place in the Cabinet, and Senator McLelan received a portfolio |» Immediately this fact was pointed to as a proof of the Government's weakouess, that they dare not open a second seat. But their joy is suddenly turned to mourning, for Senator McLelan has resigned his seat in the Senate, and will contest Col- chester in the Commons, in the place of Mr. McKay, who has also resigned. This shows plainly that the Govern- ment not only dare open one, but two seats in Nova Scotia. We believe that in Senator McLelan the Cabinet has se- cured s man of talent and ability. His present action shows that he is a man of courage as well. The country will watch with interest the coring elections. a= = Hidon Notes. An acceunt of the Sunday School Con- eert at thia place I notice in the Examiner of the 20th inst., which is both creditable to the writer and thoughtful on his part. In « few remarks whics I will now make with regard to this concert, I wish to be understood as not detracting froni that writer's aecount, but simply as supplement- ing it; nor will I meddle with it, except to correct a slight mistake therein. The elusing address was given by Mr. M. A. McDonald, and not by Miss Emma Moore, who, however, gave « nice and nicely- rencered recitation. ‘The writer, from not knowing the names of several of the parties who took part, could not be expeeted therefore to de them justice. The singing weuld have been very defieient, I fear, without the addition of Mr. Charles Mc- William, Miss MeDenald, Miss Nichelson, Miss Morrison and Miss MeLean—the former especially deserves much praise and credit for the very pleasing and satisfactory manner in which she performed her several parts. The Hymn, “Will the Angels Oome,”’ by the ies Ross and Mr. H. K. McLeod, was beautifully rendered, and j was considered by some as the piece of the | evening. In the Dialogue, Patience,’ Mr. Morrison, Mias Smith and | Mies MeWilliam did their parts well. Patience hadn't much chance to make a display, except with her ** bonnet.” In the Dialogue ‘‘ Woman’s Rights,” Mrs. Me- William, whom the strong-minded old maid led astray, well personated Mrs. Sanford iu her grief andin her joy, being, of course, quite overjoyed when Miss Mc- Lean, the gipsey who stole her ‘‘ dear little Lulu,” brought her home again. In short, every one did well, and with thanks to the stranger writer, with this as a supplement to his able and humorous remarks, I close mine on this head. The different lobster factories around here are all to work. The tirm of Shedd, Moore & Co. alone employ twenty boats in their Point Prim factory. The above-mentioned firm create quite a hum around Eildon. In connection with their starch factory they have a steam saw- ing mill, planing machine and printing | press, perhape as large as any on the Is- land. They print Isbels for the greater number of the Island factories, as well as | others on the mainland. They shipped their stareh last week in their new schooner purchased this spring in Rostcn. There have been two boats in the bay for the iast three or fcur days, not, I hope, on a “wild goose eliase.” The Mesars. Peters, lawyers, of Charlottetown, and Mr. FitzGerald, of the same place. comprise part (if net all) of the party. All the passengers were instantly plueged into the stream, more than half of them being under the debris. The first news which reached the city was brought by survivors, who struggled through the streets wet and weary. The news (el! like # thunderbolt, and a stampede took place for the spot. Arriving there a horrible sight met the view. Some Fi¥TY OR SIXTY BODISS had already been recovered and were lying on the green award seme distance up the bank. ‘Those arriving froin the eity, im every direction crowded around anxious to sec if any of their relatives were on beard. About one thousand families were repre sented on the excursion, and the wail of anguish that rose at the sight of the victims was heartrending. Fathers, mothers, brethers and sisters rushed abent panic stricken endeavoring te identify their friends. By seven o'cleck about eighty bedies were recovered from and under the wreck, where the water is some two feet in depth.
