UNIFORM COVER-AGE IDIPORT- ANT WHEN UING POTATO VINE-KILLERS Since chemical potato vine-kil- ler gprays, unlike 2, 4-D, hhVC no systemic effect, cooznplete coverage of the vines is most important for good results according to C. A. Reimer of The Dow Chemical company's South Haven. Michigfli. Agricultural Research station, Mr. Reimer, who has been ac- tively engaged in vine-killer re- search for his company for several years, has followed closely the use of Dowspray 6d Improved in all potato-growing areas. I-Ie points out that booms and nozzles should be carefully arranged so that the spray covers all parts of the vine since only one application is re- quired. Vine-killers have been described as an “artificial frost" since they accomplish chemically under con- trolled conditions what nature does haphszardiy. The use cf such materials reduces secondary growth, keeps heavy vines from clogging mechanical diggers. pre- vents spread of blight to tubers. and permits the grower to kill his fields a section at a time, spread- lng his harvest season when labor is scarce. _ FOR SALE BONNIE BLINK FARM last loyalty I miles from City. off Si. Field Husbandry Division, Central Experimental Farm, Ottawa. The removal of annual weeds by this treatment has greatly increased the yield of flax from fields which were badly infested with weeds. rThat this result can be obtained is most satisfactory. for no grain crop is so ill equipped to combat weeds as flax. It was thought at first that this delicate plant was too sensitive to 2.4-D to withstand a dose strong enough to kill annual weeds. But it should be pointed out that the margin of difference be- tween the amount of 2.4-D that will kill mustard and stlnkweed, and the amount of this chemical that will kill or seriously injure flax is slight. 1n using 2.4-D for this purpose extreme cars must be taken in use the minimum amount of 2.4-1) necessary to kill the weeds. The difference between brands of 2.4-D should also be clearly kept in mind. In potency they nre: (1) Esters (2) Amines (3) Sodium Baits. ‘fihe more potent the brand, the harder it is on all plants, ‘weeds and flax included. When using an ester. which is the most potent form of 2.4-D. special care should be taken not. to apply too much. The sooner weeds are removed from a crop the better. This is especially true of flax. ‘Iretment for weed control in flax should start as soon as the weeds have we.l ~ emerged. The flax at that time will usually be from 4 - 6 inches in height. At that stage of growth it. is safe to apply from 2 — 3 ounces of pure 2.4-1) acid per awe in the ester fcr-m. ‘A pound in the amine form and up to ‘A pound of s. sodium salt. The circular "Simplifying 1,4-D" shows how much to use of any brand of 2-4-1) sold in Canada in order io apply specified amounts of oure 2.4-D per acre.
