MORNING MARKET LETTER NEW YORK, N. Y., May 29—The first reaction of the Country to the NRA decision as expressed in the stock market apparently was’ one of relief and pleasure as stocks were bought at higher prices dur- ing the early trading. Subsequently equally heavy selling developed, particularly of stocks in those in- dustries whose price structure had been sustained by codes as the possibilities of price cutting and uncertainty over what readjust- ment might be necessary were realized. The rails and utilities naturally held well ,the favorable April rail- road 1lep3rts also were a sustaining influence on this group. Some of the loses in other sections of the 11st were quite substantial. It can- not be judged yet, just what effect if any, the NRA decision will have. About all that can be said is that it creates a. situation with tempor- arily adverse possibilities. Laidlaw and Company. BANON SAYS MONTREAL. Que, May 29- Prioes opened higher yesterday in response to a vigorous demand for shares, but early strength soon gave way to an avalanche of sell- ing which persisted throughout the entire session. Traders who acted on my repented suggestions to ac- cept profits during recent wer‘ have had their patience somewhat tried waiting for the inevitable re- action, but are now in the fortun- ate position of having funds ready for reinstatement of holdings sur- rendered on strength. I would not be inclined to buy immediately, yesterday's selloff gives every in- dicntion of continuation and I therefore suggest that profits wherever they have not yet been‘ accepted in New York stocks be taken here and on any minor ral- lies which may develop. Nornndri, Int‘l Pctzoieum and Imp Oil are likely to move down in sympathy with American securit- ies, short term traders might oc- ccpt further profits in these issues or reinstate at a moderately lower level when the selling has run its course. v Utilities and rails dlsrfaped re- mazkuble stubborness to the gen- eral selling pressure which took place in New York yesterday. Recent sluggis-hnes; of the rails is likely to b: replaced by vigorous leadership when the major advance .is again resumed. Washington hm requested busi- ness t0 adhere voluntarily to the principles of the various NRA codes. The price drorp, hwoever, re- in New York tobacco and liquor stores yesterday may be ac- cepted as initial evidence that price maintenance in general will prove a practical impossibility. Banon. BARING LETTER Tuesday Evening NEW YORK, N. Y., May 28- Bept. Wheat finally completed the additional 2 cent setback which .1 predicted lest week and should provs I purchase around today's low. What must be, _will be. I told 117.62 which is a. new high for nearly four years. and after that. they went to 112.99 closing at 113.- 20. The Industrial BVOIEQC; should go slightly below 112 and then you can buy them with your eyes shut. The three Supreme Court decisions are extremely bull- sh for the 100g pull and are likely ‘o affect the chances of the vicious Wagner Labor Bill. which is about .116 worst piece of legislation ever .> oposed and the Utility Bill will‘ .-..;~:ing 2 izme foolish people were frighten... ;d into selling because some re-, , tailers reduced cigarette prices.‘ g Fhe wholesale price was not re- , iluoed and is likely to be raised} duy Phillip Morris fcr a new high. ,‘ Fairbanks Morse did not break. 20. buy some at this level. Que, May mutu- ities continue to act better than oversee. ‘This morning's fractional recovery in industrials, however is rather feeble and ptobablllflgq favor resumption of the decline, Market behaviour of the rails has become impressive. On the @9111! Telly yesterday this division was quite prominent as prices moved up and displayed great n. luctance to yield their gains when pressure was directed against the market in general, . Political leaders in Washington are said to be running around and new ideas are being involved and from the look of things Congress adjournment may bc long delayed. None 0f the lam-e public utility holding companies examined l the Federal Tad: Commision has "suitable capital structure" from the investors standpoint, the Com. mission declared yesterday in the second installation of the report detailing the results of its investj. gatlon. “Despite the persistent crisis" declared Louis Genngln Martin yesterday "nothing can justify real alarm in the economic field because certain symptoms of zimeriorlation have been enacted." French capitail. however, continues its exodus and its hard to believe that wealthy Frenchmen are wrong en music. Con. Pacific Railway reports April net earnings at $l.412,259i as compared with $1,270,465 in April 1934. 4 months net $3,514,492 ag- ainst $4,496,904. April bank debits in Dominion reported 6.7 percent below April 1934 with decline also in. four month total. The impressive strength which has developed in rails and utilities is traceable to the idea. that the NRA decision means probably de- feat for proposed legislation hit- ting at railroads and at utilities holding companies. Rflymmld G- Biggie, executive secretary of the Retail Code Auth- OPlt-Y. Predicted last night that a l Drice war would spread through all ;etail trades by this morning.
