A YouNG MAN naméd Peter McCarey was bratually assaulted by Francis McAtee, on Black Sam’s Bridge, yesterday morning. Mc- Carey received a number of deep wounds in the head, and now lies dangerously ill. Epwarp Turcaresny, a farm laborer, has been arrested for murder and lodged in. Jail at Toronto, Ont., for the murder of Mrs. Catherine Thompson, aged 65, in Markham Township, on the 6th of April last. The murderer, who is 40 years of age, isa native of Norfolk, land, and is unmarried. He ac- knowledges his guilt, and says he murdered her for her money, of which he obtained $7.50. Elliott is trying to imitate Hanlan’s style of stroke, slide and all. Itis generally thought lessening his chance by this, as itis impossible to learn a new system of rowing in a month. Critics are cramming Elliott with advice, good, bad and indifferent, and he will be glad when the affair is over. GREAT BRITAIN, Lonpon, May 16. In the House of Commons the Government contradicted the statement of Prof. Williams, that American cattle are not suffering from pleuro-pnenmonia ; hence the order for com- pulsory slaughter has not been rescinded. The steamers ‘‘Minnesota” and ‘‘Hindope”’ have arrived at Liverpool from Boston, with upwards of one thousand three hundred pigs. The Government Inspector discovered the serious presence of typhoid fever among the animals, and the whole of the cargoes were | ordered to slaughtered in ten days. The ar- rangements for slaughtering are extremely bad, and great expense will beincurred. Altogether three thousand five hundred pigs have been similarly condemned on acccunt of typhoid fever since the Ist inst. ‘The loss to the im- porters is very serious.
