Ever foremost in anything that was for the benefit ol the church he loved and the advance- ment of the Kingdom of Christ, 'as a member of the board of management he was a tour of strength, being pos- sessed of intelligence much above the average together with a keen sense of justice, an innate hatred of what savored in the least of duplicity, a fearless advocate of those whom he conceived to be right. Ever bringing to bear on all questions the innu- encc of an unbiased and mature judg- ment, his opinions and advice were sought and highly esteemed even af- ter he had, on account of ill-health, been laid aside from participating actively in the work. Yet it is in the home where he was ever the wise counsellor, the good and kind hus- band and parent, and where lie dis peiiseil true and genuine, though un- ostentations, hospitality, that he will really be missed. Of him it truly might be said that "A prince and a great man has fallen." I-Ie leaves to mourn a wirlbw, an aged father, two sons and six daughters, viz! John D., Ellie, Elizabeth and Sadie at home; Daniel, Flora, Margaret and Cather ing in Boston; also, four brothers and two sisters, viz: Alex. J., in Haitsville; John T. and Neil, in Charlottetown; Rev. J. W., in Bel- fast. The sisters are Mrs. Alex. Ma- theson of Emerald and Mrs. Neil Mc- Leod, I-Inrtsville. Though the roads were in a bad state a large number attended the funeral, the services of which were conducted by his pastor, Rev. John Gillis, assisted by the Rev. R. G. Strathie of Zion Church, Charlottetown. The pall-bearers were Red. McLeod, John Clarkin, Dougald McPherson, Michael Coady, Kenneth McDonald and Dr. J. M. McLeod. WHAT OUR FARMERS HAVE DONE Dear Sir:-In looking over the Can- adian Farm Journal of Jan. 13t‘i, l llnd the following heading to a para- graph-“Agricultiire Left Out." The same might be said of some of our Island papers, in summing up the events of the past year. They com- mented largcly on what 'our military men had done when competing with other Provinces of Canada; which was all right and we are always proud of what they do. Also our rthlctes who went to the oth-Ur l'ro- \ :mes and won honors for our ls- laul, and we lift our hats to the boys who uphold the fair name of Farm fu Sale Little York containing 130 acres in a good st ate ol cultivation, with good buildings and orchard. But what about the farmers who were never mentioned, the men who went to St. John, Halifax. and Am- herst Exhibitions end carried od 75 rer cent. ol all prizes in which they competed. By so doing they were building tip the name of our Pro- :incc in stock raising and agricul- ture. And, as agriculture is the chief lndustry of our Island, the success of these men help to open up trade abroad, and thereby increase the prosperity of our Province. Que1:n's Co. FARMER. - THE INCOME TAX. Dear Sir:-I am thankful that you have brought the injustice of the In- come Tnx to the, notice of the Gov- ernment. There is another class, that you have not mentioned, that is the man on a small income. I will just state the case ofa good many. A farmer aged 70 finds he can not work the farm any longer, through intirmity, and the ditllculty of getting help. He sells the__ farm. moves- into town, buys a house and lot. l-le then has,_say, .$5,000. l-ie puts that out at 6 pcr cent. That brings him in $300. How can he pay taxes, insurance, and the extra cost of living on such a mere pittancei Yct he must pay a tax on every dol- lar of his income. The man on sal- ary or wages has $350 exempt. And yet you say there are many rich men who only pay a quarter of what they o law. No one ought to be taxed, wh for liiniself and wife. is nit put right, I shall know wha country has such a law. ‘Thanking ready taken, for justice and fair-play main, ' Yours truly, A SUFFERER.
