ily 1'llornton DUSTER BEATS SOBE PAW When there's no one else to name kLikely you're the one to blame. a - -Old Mother Nature. Most folks like to blame otlhers or their troubles. yet more often ,than not. they are to blame them- selves. Somehow, self-blame is like la dose of bad medicine-hard to snake. Buster Bear was in trouble. 'Buster had A sore paw, and there was no one to blame but himself. 4 He had been careless. He had been , , thoughtless. Carelessness and '9 thouglhtlcssnr.-ss go together. Bus- . to-r had taken something for grant- ” ed without first making sure that ,it was as he thought it was. He Q had thong-ht Unc' Billy Possum i was in a hollow treeon the ground and he had thrust a paw in without Lint making sure no one else was Ln there. Some one else was in there. It was Prickly Porky the , Porcupine. Feeling about Buster ,.'Bear had put that paw down on i Prickly Porky's tail. ; Now Prickly Porky's tail is one of the pricklies-t things in all the . Great World. it in covered with l needle-sharp little spears called v quills. They are very loosely fast- ened to the skin of that tail. W-hen Buster Bear put his paw down on that tail a number of those little ears not only prlcked him but were left in his paw when he pul- ed it Ollvf. Buster danced and yowled. Yes. uir. he yowlcd. Those little spears hurt and he knew that they would .hurt more. They were not the l irst of Prtckly.Porky's spears he ihad felt. when he stopped dancing about he trnied to get hold of those little spears and pull them out. It hurt. You see, those little spears are '.covered with tiny scales that are 'Jike barbs on fish hooks. The lit- ! -tle spears go in all right, but they - are hard to pull out, and oh. how 3 it hurts doing it. Buster pulled ..some out, but some were bitten : of! leaving the points in his paw. They worked their way in deeper. Buster couldn't put that paw on the ground without it's hurting so I that he would whine. So Buster ” went about on three legs holding that core paw up. The worst of it xvwas. he knew that he had only 5 himself to blame for it. Now getting enough to eat j wasn't easy with one paw. You ,k:rlow Buster Bear likes to pull. open old stumps for the insects and sometimes the mice that are in . them: he likes to dig open ant hills and lick up the ants; above all he niikes to find a hollow tree full of honey and tear it open. for Buster iearly loves honey. 'I7here are certain roots he likes to eat and he ms to dig them out of the ground. ,';?With only one paw to use Buster )ouldn'i. do any of these things Ivory well. and he couldn't run . lbout: he had to limp Fortunately 'or him, there were plenty of her- -ies and those he could get with- vut the use of both paws. i Somehow none of his neighbors in the Green Forest seemed to be ponry for Buster Bear. They said was his own fault and served .im right. Those that usually were nost afraid of him no longer were i .f.raid of him. They wouldn't be as "long as that paw was too sore for lim to put it on the ground. As for Pnickly Porky, he came t of that hollow tree and climb- (1 another tree without so much s a look at Buster Bear. He knew. hat Buster couldn't climb up after , lm and wouldntt if he could. He and Jimmy Skunk. both of whom are armed for defense and not for offense. are the most independent folk in all the Green Forest. You see. they are at all times fully armed and fully prepared for any attack that an enemy may make. They offer an example which even ll great nation like ours would do well to follow. They insure their own in- dependence. GDDDc4frfD contract Bridge 3: Josephine ' Culbertson nceueomotumuoammnnnnoztmoa. Pun 1 Q Pun 2 N '1' Pan 3 N '1' Pan Put fur West felt sure that the enemy had clubs well controlled, and so he led the spade deuce. South won with the king and laid down the top hearts. The fall of East's queen was a pleasant sight to South. who now crossed to the heart jack and returned a low club. East was either napping, or he was concerned only in holding the enemy's overtricks to a minimum- in any case, he "played low on the club lead, and now. of course, South could claim his nine kicks. East, upon seeing dummy, should have realized that the opposing contract might not be nearly as sound as he had feared it would be. North had responded to the double with I. diamond on no- thing in the suit, and South had then jumped to two notrump. It was obvious that South had three spade tricks-he must have been able to take East's nine more cheaply than with the king-and when the hellnt situation was re- vealed by West'a third-round play of the ten, Soullh was marked with five heart tricks. T-hua. East should have gone right in with the club ace and shifted to diamonds. By George Clark?
