LONDON. Feb. 17.-With naval
plans completed to meet the sub-
marine campaign which Germany will
launch against her to-morrow, Britain
awaited the issue to-day with all
calmness, confident of her ability, not
only to ward off German attacks, but
also to establish a blockade of the
German coast to prevent any food
supplies from reaching Germany by
watery _

Behnicke, of the German Marine De-
partment, that Germany has not
enough food to feed her population,
since Britain cut oft' her supply,

Britain to urge a relentless campaign

helm will give his blessing to thc Ger-

formally launched, and will urge his
undersea terrors to wipe English mer-

submarine by the Emperor, and ex-

setting an example ot' economy in
war time to his subjects, much as
Emperor Wilhelm is doing in Ger-
many, M. Cedard, the head chef’ at
Buckingham Palace, has agreed to ae-
cept a 50 per cent. reduction in his

was $6,250 a year. »
The cooking at the Palace is now
of the plainest character. and ot' a
kind that might be found in any fairly
well-to-do house. it could be per-

OTTAWA, Feb. 17.-Hon. J. I). Reid,
Minister of Customs. issued to-day the
trade figures for ten mouths ending
January 31. lt is t.he most encourag-
ing trade report which has apcparcd
for months. . »
The most striking feature oi' the
figures is the tact that exports show
a considerable increase. There is an
increase for the month of January
in exports of over three million dol-
lars over exports of January 1914.
The exports for the month were
$28,595,721, as against $25,218,887
last year.

is reported that bombs dropped by the

will be impossible for the Germans to

OTTAVVA, Feb. 17.-The special
committee of the House of Commons
appointed to investigate the boots
supplied to Canadian soldiers will
likely hold a preliminary meeting this
week for investigation and to deter-
mine thc mode of precedure.
Sir James Aikins will be appointed
chairman. It is the intention oI` thc
Government and the members of the
committee lo commence the investiga-
tion without deiay, so that the report
can be completed and acted upon
immediately.

the inquiry as thorough and exhaus-

dcn. the Prime Minister, received a
“telegram front Brockville. Ont., last
night stating that three aeroplanes
had passed over Brockville at 10 p. m.
flying in the direction of Ottawa. 'I‘he
aeroplancs came from New York State
over the St. Lawrence River.
(Joi. Percy Sherwood, chief' oi’ the
Dominion Police, had a telephone mes-
sage from the (Thief of Police at
Brockville who ini'ormed him that
three or four aeroplanes had crossed
the river St. Lawrence about 10
o'clock tonight from New York State
and had passed over Brockville, trav-
eiling in a northcasterly direction. pre-
sumably towards Ottawa. lie said
that one ot' the acroplanes while cros-
sing thc St. Lawrence had dropped
some fire balls or light balls.
The news spread quickly amongst
the members oi' Parliament and a num-
ber oi' them made their way to the
rooi' oi' the main building to watch for
the reported visitors. About 11.15
o'clock orders were issued to darken
the Parlianient buildings. Every light
in the grounds was extinguished and
cvery blind drawn.
Orders have also been given by Col.
Sherwood to dakren Rideau Hall, the
official residence oi’ the Governor Gen-
eral of (lanada and thc lloyal Mint.
The Dukc of Connauglit, thc Gover-
nor General, has gone to Winnipeg to
inspect tho troops of tht- garrison
there but thc Duchess of (.‘onnu.ught
and Princess Patricia are at Govern-
ment House.
The Royal Mint herc. is a branch of
the Royal Mint at London, Eng. ln it
is minted the gold coinage of thc
Dominion as well as a portion of the
British gold coinage chief sovereigns.
This is the first time since the Royal
Mint was opened here that it has been
in darkness. it has always been kept
brilliantly illuminated.
