An l men get their due Without applying such a malo- dorous epithet to the supporters of the Bell party the proverb might be paraphrased into a statement to the effect that when men whose veracity is in dis- some occasional glimpses of the 1y to obtain at least M. L. A... and the truth. Mr. A. E. McLean. Island Farmer, the former a member or an ex-mem- ber of the Bell party and the latter a close relative of the Liberal organ. the Pioneer. have recently en- tered into a controversy as to which of the two, if either, is telling the truth. and the public are not yet 1 any the wiser. Mr. lllcLean comes back with a sec- ond very long letter in the last Farmer and mildly intimates-that the recent attempts of that paper to place him_ Mr. McLean, in 'a false position before the people of this province “will rebound with greater force in your own direction" (meaning the Farmer.) We gather from Mr. .\lcLean's letter that the point at issue is whether Mr. McLean adopted, in the "House last session, the position which he had in a previous letter claimed to have taken. The Farm- er claims that he did not, Hr. McLean claims that he did and in substantiating his claim he tells some things that some other members of the much op- pressed Bell party had stoutly denied. Mr. NIcLe-ain there was a "paper" in connection with the propaganda for increased iutlemnities and that he was asked to sign it: other honorable members speak ' ‘i l mg through the Farmer stoutly denied that there was a “round robin." Whether the “paper” Mr. McLean refers to was the "round robin" the other members had denied the existence of is still a moot question and the only thing that is really definitely‘ known l about the question is the fact, not now disputed, that 1 the indemnity was raised, with or without unani- __ lnous consent, from $200 to $500. Mr. McLean speci~ fically mentions Messrs Higgs, Irving and Metherall as‘ witnesses to the fact that a ‘ paper" was present- ~ e . E’ The Farmer had stated that Mr. McLean had‘ by making certain revelations. “upset the equilib- rium of local politics." While not denying that the “equilibrium" has been upset. Mr. McLean retorts that it is the Farmer that is “upset.” _ Mr. McLean claims also that the poll tax was set at $2.00 by a unzinimotls vote but was subsequent- ly changed to $3.00 at a meeting at which he was not present. This is perhaps the most interesting l statement in his letter and corroborates similar char- ges made by others, namely that the government, is ruled by a “hidden hand." It recalls Mr. Gavin Dutfyfis statement at the Charlottetown meeting in March -l ti pute disagree among themselves the public are like-i As intimated some time ago lhe Bell Government has relused to ac- cept possession of the Dalton San- atorium (rum the ‘Federal authorit- ies. it will be renumbered that dur lllt GllAlllllTTlETilWN culnnllv "m" ling the war. in June. i917, the Pro- vincial Government and the Board of commissioners of the Dalton son alorium entered into un agreement with the Federal Authorities, repre scnled by the Soldiers Civil lie-em inblishmeni: Board. by which it was stipulated that the latter were lo conduct the institution paying .i.l expenses during such time ns ihc institution would be needed tor the lreauneni of tuberculous. sol- diers. after which the properly would rrYS-Fi to lho province.
