HALIFAX, Aug. 28-Leaving the city hall at 3 o'clock' yesterday afternoon. Thomas Wilby commenced the first leg of his tranecontincntal automobile iournei’ to find a "great white highway," from Halifax to Vancouver, carrying letters from Mayor Bli-gh and Presi- dent Dwyer, of the hoard of trade, to be delivered to similar officials in the latter city. Preceding the start over the long trail, Deputy Mayor Martin and a number of aldermen gave the motor- ist a formal send-od on this pioneer venture in Canada. A large crowd gathered to see the presentation of the messages which was from the city hall steps, accompanied by speeches by the deputy mayor and others. Before taking his departure Mr. Wilby was presented with a Hali- fax pennant by W. B. McDonald. The car which was made in Canada especially for the trip, was decked all over with flags and mottoes, y' showin its purpose and that it was Z working in the interests of the Cana- dian Highway associatlon. lt is being piloted by an expert chautieur. Some half dozen Halifax machines escorted the path-finder for several miles along the main road from Halifax to Truro, this being the first part of the route. The run across Canada will be \\n- broken with the exception of a 700 mile stretch in the wilderness of western Ontario. This part will be skipped, the auto being shipped by lake steamer to Port Arthur. This is the first time an automobile ever attempted to go from the Atlantic to the Pacific over Canadian soil.
