eR aR BC sieemmns? « - pe ee _—- ~_ ———— nt * Local and Other Items. TEMPERANCE Ratty this evening in the Atheneum. Rev. J. M. McLeod and others will give addresses. Tue name of Hon. J. S. Carvell, lately ap- pointed Senator, was registered at the Cana- dian Offices, London, on the 4th Dec. Persons crossed the Hillsborough on foot to-day. The ferry boat has been running ; but will probahly have to stop to-morrow. Tux latest rumor regarding the Hon. W. McDougall is that he is about to take up his abode at Uttawa and practice his profession as a lawyer. True Tea and Fancy Sale in aid of Zion Church was well attended and very enjoy- able. The entertainment was enlivened with music by the choir. The sum realized was about $150. Conviction.—On the 8th December, before James H. Bourk, J. P.. John Finlay, of Ver- non River, was convicted and fined in the sum of $20 and costs for retailing spirituous liquors without license. First offence. 1. O. O. F.—Wildey Lodge. No. 27.—Mem- bers will please attend at their Lodge Room (Quirk's Building), this evening (Friday), at eight o'clock, sharp. Init., Deg., Nomination of Officers and other business.—C, F. Yarns, R. 8. THE WRITER was shown to-day, two coun terfeit Union Bank bills received from the Chief of Police, in St. John. It is not likely that any of these counterfeits are in circula- tion in this Island—the man engaged in cir- culating them having been arres before he arrived here. But should any one be suspicious of a note presented to him, he has only to look to the paper, which, in the counterfeit article, isso thin and transparent that the printing on one side can easily be seen through it on the other. This cannot be done with a genuine note unless it be held up to a window or some other strong light. Tue attendance at the market on Fri- day was large. Prices were as follows :— Beef (small) from 5 to 12 cents per lb; beef (qr.) from 3 to 7 cents per lb.; mutten, from 4 to 8 cents per lb.; lamb, from 3 to 7 cents per lb.; pork (per lb.) from 7 to 9 cents; pork (per carcass) from 5 to 6 cents; geese, from 40 to 65 cents each; ducks, from 20 to 30 cents each; chickens, from 30 to 40 cents per pair; butter (fresh) from 16 to 20 cents per lb.; butter (tub) from 15 to 16 cents per lb.; eggs, from 20 to 25 per doz.; potatoes, from 16 to 20 cents per bushel; oats, from 323 to 33 cents er bushel; hay, from 30 to 35 cents per 100 bs; flour per 100 Ibs., from 3.00 to 3.25; oat- meal from 2.25 to 2.50; turkeys 70 cts. to $1. Pexny Reapvixcs.—Samuel Weiler is re- rted to have cut short his letter to his sweet- eart so that she might ‘‘wish it were longer.” Doubtless the audience in St. Peter’s School eon Thursday evening wished the entertain- ment longer, though, we are assured, the reason for ‘‘ cutting it short” was not Sam Weller's. It was due to the fact that some of those who promised to take part were unavoid- ably absent. Weare quite sure that that which was lacking last night will be more than made up on Tuesday evening, next after Christmas, when, we are-informed, a special entertain- ment will be given for the Christmas season. The list of contributors has received quite an accession in the person of Mrs. Brown, who, last night, opened the entertainment with a beautiful piano solo, Major Freeland’s song was well sung and well received; and Mrs. McNab, with her ‘‘cup of tea,” made even a better impression than on her first appearance. Miss DesBrisay’s popularity has not waned, and her solo received its meed of applause. Mr. L., W. Watson's solos were well executed. ‘The readings were good but rather shorter than the average. The absence of duets, quartetts and choruses made a want which we hope to see supplied. The follow: ing is the programme, as rendered :— PROGRAMME. Piano Solo, — Mrs. Brown Reading, — Mr. Cotton Son,—‘‘Some Love to Roam,” — Major Freeland Reading, —‘‘The Enchanted Net,” — Mr. Morson .
