DUDLEY TELLS EVIDENCE

J _ Frank Hickey, formerly of Boston,
was on the verge of collapse to-day
as authorities from New York prep-
ered to take him to Rochester, and
later to the- Erie County Jail, .to
face an indictment for murder in the
first degree.
'Hickey is indicted for the murder
of Joseph Joseph at Lackawanna, n
suburb of_BuBalo, a year ago.K.'i-le is
under suspicion of being the murder-
er of Michael Kruck; a New York
newsboy, ten years ago.
Hickey, protesting that he is inno-
cent of the crime charged against
him, asked that he be guarded
against attack if taken back to Lack-
awanna. He reliizes that feeling in
that town runs high against him.
Wesley C. Dudley, District Attorney
oi Erin County, and Chief of Police
Gilson, of Lackawanna have conferred
with Hickey, andhave told ,him some
thing of the evidence they have
against l_s_‘_r_n,_they declare. It was af-
ter they.d.id that Hickey declared his
innocence.
WILL BUCCEED DR. RUTHER-
FORD IN IMPORTANT POSITION
OTTAWA, Nov. 21.-The appoint-
ment of John Bright, of Myrtle.

Commissioner, made vacant by the
resignation of 'Dr_ Rutherford some
time o.-go, is understood to have been
decided upon. Dr. Rutherford was
veterinary general as well as live-
stock commissioner, but upon his
leaving the service it was decided to
divide the ollics in order that the
closest attention might be -given to
each branch. Dr. Torrance, of Winni-
peg, was appointed veterinary gener-
al and has until now been acting
livestock commissioner. The new
commissioner is one- of the bust
known authorities on llv€Bli0Ck- in
Canada. He has done much good
work in tho interests oi the livestock
industry both in- and out.. of Ontario,
and has beenn president of the Wm-
ter Fair and a member of the Onta-
rio stallion enrollment bourd. His
wide knowledge of lfuve stock is re-
cognized all over the Dominion. Rnd
he has frequently acted as illdgn nf-
stocir exhibitions, having vary recent-
