G. Seaman, \ question of salaries-theside of the peop those of Judges. King Edward, large as ‘ are his emolunients, has subjects whose incomes are greater than his. There is no ipcoiigruity in a President at $50,030 u year stainding oilicially superior to Citi- zen Carnegie, whose income is a mil- lion a month. Nor can it be claimed th it in all cases lawyers whose incomes at the bar are the largest will in all cases make the best Judges. Many instances to the contrary might be cited. The adjoining Province of New Bruns- wick has within a tow yearslhad two of judicial duties. They had been befor 3 g r their elevation to the Bench in receipt ot Alberton, Aiberton Bookstore-G. S. In the past Canada has now a formidable civil ser- their pay increased and the cry is still for more. The first Parliament of Canada re solved that the pay of thc = Governor Gen- were then paid $5.C ‘J and that has been tl to the Premier. Now an agitation is on to raise the pay of members o S honest and economical worker. Already one I _ ` . d ot our Superior CourtJudges receives I a single year more than the value of an average farm-a farm which represents the labor and saving of a lifetime to some t __ the workers to pay still more? Last Week the Senate discussed the pay of the Judges and there was a loud call for more money on their behalf. Every lawyer in the House who hopes some day to become a Judge desires to have the sal- ary made larger for his future benefit. Apavt from this the lawyers desire to en- joy the favor of the Judges, and " feel quite sure they' will not give olf- ence by increasing the emolu- nients of the bench. The main arguments are those with which we all are familiar. It is said the cost of living has increased, and this is true on'y because oilicial persons desire to live in greater luxury than the men of a past age. The cost of the necessuries of life is really _less throughout Canada than during' a past generation. .Then we are told of some ccuntries where the Judges and other ofhcials are paid more than they get in Canada. ln this regard the precedents a id e.\'aniples are all di-avi n from beyond the sons-American examples are avoided -for the very good reason that salaries are relatively higher in Canada than in the United States. OurGovernor General receives the same pay as the President and each of our 15 or 16 Cabinet Ministers as much as is paid to each of the eight Cabinet Ministers of the- great Republic. Lastly the old familiar plea is put for~ ward that Judges ought to be paid more because some few lawyers earn more than the Judges before whom they plead, and it is argued that we cannot get the beat men for J udges unless we pay them more. We fancy that there is very little ditlieulty on that score. Although our Island J udges are perhaps the worst paid in Canada-an inequality that ought to be rectified-there is no dimculty in finding good men for the place when a judicial shall dx their own salaries regardless” o those who have tn pay them. The woman who mislays her hat and looks for it in her purse, among other im- possible places, is very like the physician who looks in all sort of impossible places for the cause of a disease. The heart be- gins to act irregularly and straightway there’s an exam- ination of the heart to nnd what is interfering with it. The liver gives trouble, and is dosed with drugs and pounded with l pills to bring to light the cause, and all the time the cause of the trouble is in the stomach. _ The i n ti m at e connection of the stomach with the heart and the other ‘ vital organs, nec- - essarily results in the sympathy of these organs with ’ any derangement ~.~_Q\__ \\\\§`??§’<>`?Y'€ji _ \ ` L 'lf _ VZ 0 //1 _ ,__ ¢ ’/Z Jifhi \ §` fl 7» if //I. or disease of the stomach and the ' _ , ' ` organs of diges- ` tion and nutrition. Thousands have been cured of palpita- tion, liver trouble, shortness of breath, pain in the side, backache, and numerous other complaints by the useof Dr. Pierce’s Golden Medical Discovery. This medicine acts directly upon the stomach, the organs of digestion and nutrition and the blood mak» ing glands, and the fact that it cures so many forms of disease is the best proof that these diseases originate in the stomach and must be cured through the stomach. “ I had been am sufferer for several years, und my family said I would mit be a liv- ipg man in _two years. but, thank God, I am still living," writes Mr. George W.
