During the short time I had the honor to re- reeent you, the House of Assembly and the overnment have bad to contend with plots. schemes and conspiracies, to bring about its overthrow. We have had no chance. no fair play—liaving a one-sided partisan Governor ,and an obstructive Legislative Council to combat during the whole Session. I think I hear many of you say —No . We will not submit to that. Our fore- fathers suffered too much to induce us to coun- tenance despotism. If such are our senti- ments, you can give proof of them y discoun- tensncing the party who has brought this ex use, turmoil an strife upon you. ‘hey hypocritically tell you. that you will have privilege of electing your own ollicers; while, at same time, it is notorious. that a great effort is being made by them. to put nearly all the principal ofiices into the hands of the Legislative Council, who are not responsible to on; three of whorri. the new family corn ct. it is lieved, hope to divide some £1200 year y among themselves. But, remember, you have no voice in their appointtiient. A nice way this to squander our money ! Were the Council abolished. we would save sotnc £1000 each car by it. or were they ninde elective, there would then he seine reasonable ground for their being paid But Mr. Whelan. no doubt, sympathizes with those who are seeking to obtain ollice. When his party succeeds in getting a ma‘ rity again. I sup- pose we shall he ruled. as Mr. helan threatened. at a public meeting in the Temperance Ilall. “ with a r 0 iron!" Mr. Coles was present at that nieetin . and it is well known. that M . Col and bclsn plot and scheme together. whatever they may seem to say to the contrary. But Gentle- men. the only way to get an end ut to this sort of work, is, to rid both branches 0 the Legislature altogether of oflics-holders. for a bill last Session. positively excluding every one holding an ollice of emolument from the Legislature, with the exception of two. the Attorney General and the Colonial Secretary; but this would not suit the Coun- cil, who wanted inany.of the offices themselves, and consequently threw out the bill. I am now deter- mined to go farther, and I pledge myself, that if returned ugain,I will bring in II bill to exclude every ofllcr-Itoldsr from both branches of the Legislature, the same as in the United States. and no country in the world thrives. or “ goes a head,” faster than the United States of America—so far I am willing to copy from their institutions; and if the Legislative Council will not pass the bill. we will memorslize the horns Government for leave to remodel that y.
