The people of Canada. from one end of the Dominion to the other are called to observe tomorrow, Thursday October 19th, as a day of Thanks- .. giving to Almighty God for the bless- l' ings of the year. Doubtless it will be »bserved heartily, for the Canadian people are probably as strongly im- bued with religious sentiments as any l community in the world, and never before had they grxter reason to re- turn thanks to the iver of all good gift s. The year has been one of except- husbandmen who form so large a proportion of our popula- tion, have been rewarded with abundant crops. Prices for our .surplus products have been better than in past years. Trade has ex- panded beyond all previous records. Manufacturing industries have been exceptionally busy and prosperous. The toilets in the forests and those engaged in gathering the harvest of the sea have been fairly rewarded, 'while Clnldion mines have yielded ' better returns than ever xfore. It has been a year PGICB. of lplenty, and of health, exempt from ,lobe calamities of war, pesti ence or isuy great national ca smity. We ‘l have a great, rich, healthful prosper- ‘ous and well governed country, a country of churches -and schools, where under just laws the fullest measure of civil and religious liberty is enjoyed. Such are a few of the national considerations which ought to move the people of Canada to devout thanksgiving tomorrow. ' To these there are tensof thousands who ought toremember the many y personal and family mercies they havb ‘received during the year and to re- Offerb pOllCl€S just ' turn thanks therefore. That is, however about a fair proportion of the 1-000 men to be sent by the entire Dominion to South Africa. The Island’s population is not quite one fortieth of the total popula- tion of Canada.
