The informaticn I received was from reliable sources. Mr. ,Tayler, to the contrary, I affirm that the horse’s does cr did hold marke caused by being beaten with a chain, but they would not be easily distinguishable as it would make a general swelling. I couid hear the thud of some ef the blows with the chain on the horse fully fifty yards dis- tant. As to Mr. Taylor’s remarks on me, they are hardly worth noticing. The pub- lié may judge how “* unjust,” or how “ un- scrupulous” I have been. My ‘*‘ faults” are not in question; after witnessing the scene of Thursday evening last I was not so foolish as to accept ‘‘ thanks” from Mr. Taylor. 1 have iried to curtail this communica- tion to rersonable size, and could cover a couple of sheets of paper more, defending myself from the multitude of ugly expres- sions used by Mr. Taylor. The EXaMIneR is wise, for if there is a paper in this Dominion prepared to run full tilt against facts and to play jug- sling tricks with figures it is the Bloncton Times.-- Patriot. This is very neat as a paragraph, bnt it is neither fact or argument. The Patriot jimtimated a few days ago that the N. P. had caused an increase in the price of cot- ton warps from $1.00 to $1.50 per bundle of 5 lbs. We puinted out that the increase in the duty was only equal to 74 cents on a $1.00 bundle—that is the duty was changed from seventeen ond a half per cent. ad valorem to fifteen per cent. ad valorem, and a specific duty of two cents per [h,—equa! to 25 per cent. It was the Patrwt that ‘Suggled with the warp figures, and ran full tilt against the facts.— Moncton Vimes. . oar One of the best jokes perpetrated of late was that ia which the Grit press was the ‘victim. Wirn Seuator MecLelan was ap- pointed to the Cabinet it was not stated that he was about te resign his seat and enter the Commons. The Reformers there ‘fore imagined that the new Minister would remain in the Senate, fer which they at. tacked him and the Government, Billings- igately. Among the competitors was Eph. Clow, of Prince Ed- yard Isiand. He was looked upon asm probable winner of first prize, but sudden- Jy retired at three v'clock on the last day when he had made 502 miles and two laps. ‘Says one report: ‘“‘At this time an utterly ‘unc Xpected and exciting incident occurred. | Eph. On the fourth day of the race, Clow made s {wonderful performance, having from tne iatartatla, m. to 9 p. m. travelled 95} ,mmiles.
