Canadians At Home Will Send Bibles
io the Fighting Men
By every mail subscriptions are
coming for the Bible Fund for our
sold‘ier's.»
That our men in the trenches in
Europe were in actual need oi Bibles,
none of us had imagined.
The comfort of religion has never
been more completely realized
'by these men, than now when in the
daily endurance of untold discomforts
neur to the vestibule of death or of
wounding.
And the Bible lies so near to the
very foundations of their religion!
There is no liner -book of devotions, no
source ot more serene meditations.
Holy memories are bound up with its
inspiring messages, spiritual strength
comes from its calm, con-tldent pro-
mises. Not a mother, wife nor lover
hut would be solaced' by the assurance
that the Bible was being read by the
lighting men. _
But Bibles are easily destroyed in
the reeking mud ol' Flanders. in such
fig-htln-g as our men are opposed to
the flendish enemy in the great battle
before Ypres and Amiens, all equip-
ment, including of course, Bibles,
parishes rapidly. Rapid changes of
quarters oftentimes mean the loss of
all personal property. ‘
The Government will replace shells
or cntrldges expended, rifles destroy-
ed. or bayonets _bent. Someone else
must see that the stock oi Bibles on
hand are ample enough to supply all
needs. ~
A little money goes a. long way ln
buying Bibles or portions of Bibles.
For a single d'ollar a hundred copies
of sin-gls Gospels can be bought, for
live dollars a hundred serviceable New
Testaments and for twenty dollars a
hundred small print complete Bibles.
For sixty dollars a hundredg large
plain-printed Bibles would be furnish-
ed.
But a good many dollars will be rc-~
quired li’ everyone ol' our men is to
receive a little of the Word of Life.
All should gladly co-operate with
those who desire to help our soldiers to
it little more comfort-mental and
spiritual. You would not have them
without tho Old Book, when accounts
received tell us oi' their anxiety to re-
ceive its help and comfort!
W-hen men distribute any Bible they
may have in single leaves among
hundreds oi' eager hands. when bits of
candle, even matches arevhoardeil to
read them by at night, there can be no
doubting the need!
