Dao Talmage’s Sons & Co, Annual Review of the Rice Culture in Louisiana, dated New Orleans, October 13:h, supplies the tellowing :— The crop 1881-82, 240 197 barrels, was the largest ever murketed in this State, and sold at very remunerative prices. The crop of 1882-'83 was expected to be fully 300,000 barrels, but ou account of rains during the harvest and blight. the amount of good grocery grades will probably be less thau last year. Prices are lower than at equal date any vear since the rice culture was established in Louisiava., —- <>: Kind Treatment of Animals. No avimal appreciates kiad treatmen more than a heifer. Naturally geutle, i is oOuly by neglect that acquire habits harmful to herself and annoying to her owner. The writer has seen a calf six mouths cld made the object of torment for sport by a group of * smart’ boys. The heifer had a bundle of corn etalks bound under her body by a stout cord aud was then set at liberty in the barnyard. She ran and kicked, and finally broke through a weak place in the feuce and hurried away to the back of the field. The creature was never afterwards the gentle animal she would ctherwise have been. The fright made her afraid of all mankind, and especially of the boys by whom she had suifered In some such way as this, most of th ** wilduess” in farm auimals has its ori gia. At this season, when the young stock are for the first time brought into closer relations with the owners or keepers, it is of great importance to employ kind ness and gentleness.—American Agri culturist for November. she —— > ET Persona!—Gossip.
