Ouolily Breeding? From P. E. I. Slock Noted In Alberta In a recent imua of the Coun- try Ciulde. published in Winnipeg, reference is made to the fact that hog breeders are willing and ready to pay premium prices at auc- tion sales this year for pigs with Advanced Registry breeding be- hind them. The article goes on to say that Yorkshire boars out of Iowa quel- ified for Advanced Registry were placed in the Lacombe district of Alberta and that pigs sired by these boars when auctioned at local sales, brought two to three dollars more per head then other pigs of similar size. Commenting on the above arti- cle, Mr. H. ,W. Clay, senior live- stock ileldman, states that last spring eight bred sows of P. E. I. Yorkshire stock and a boar were shipped to the Lacombe area and at the present time he has or- ders ior beers from the Province of Alberta. Mr. Clay calls atten- tion to the fact that at the Is- land A. R, test station last year 8370 of the hogs tested graded "A" while in Ontario the Advanc- ed Registry carried out on the same feed as in P. E. I. had a pre- centage of 43 grade A's. "It can be seen from this”, said Mr; Clay, "that the difference in percentage does not occur in the feeding but in the breeding."- , Boars in Prince Edward Island are not bonused by the provincial department of Agriculture unless they are out of sows scoring as points or more out of 9, possible 100. A point worthy of note in hog grading throughout Canada is the fact that the further away from this Province. the lower the percentage of grade A hogs. Nova Scotia and New Brunswick are fast improving the quality of their hogs by the extensive importation of Island breeding stock. Prince Street Home. School Ass'n. Meefs The regular monthly meeting of the Prince Street Home and School Association was held last evening in the assembly hall with the president. Rev. Marvel Dunblir presiding. Maritime Title Class Plan Plowing Malch Expansibn ..'A formal application will be made to the Provincial and Fed- eral Governments by the Dundas Plowing Match Association to have considered as a class "3" fair the annual plowing match" and exhibition staged each fall at Dundee. This was made known at the annual meeting held at Bridgetown hall yesterday which was presided over by the presi- dent, Mr. L. 5. Hunter. From a small beginning. the annual Dundas fair has gradually grown larger each year through the untlrlng efforts of the mem- bers, until -today it has become one of the major events of the year in the province. Where form- erly it attracted only entries from a small radius, today its entries extend almost over the province. and the provincial plowing com- petition attracts not only Island spectators but mainlanders as well. Besides the avid interest in plow- ing, there has also grown a. great interest in the livestock show which includes every breed of dairy and -beef cattle, horses. swine. sheep and poultry. 10511111- er with a first class display in the handicraft building of cook- ing. flowers. agricultural products MT. HOPE FOB EXPANSION The members of the association have spared no effort to make the show ever bigger and better, but finances have proved to be e de- terrent to their plans. It is their expectation that the fair will now meet the requirements of a. class "3" fair. In this event fifty per cent of the cost of building and maintenance will be granted to- gether with 5500.00 for junior activities and S200.00 for judges. This will be of inestlmeble bene- fit to the progress and growth of the Dundas exhibition. and per- mit the members to set up ample facilities for a complete livestock showing which is fast becoming one of the major attractions of the two-day fair. The business of the meeting in- cluded the minutes and financial statement presented by the secre- tery. Mr. Albert Acorn, who has WPEDIY filled this office for sev- eral years. The financial state- ment showed receipts of 55,762.49, and disbursements amounting to 36,612.78. To increase the already great interest in plowing, it was decid- ed to inaugurate a Maritime championship class. and the 1954 champions of Nova Sootla and New Brunswick will be invited to compete against the 1954 Island champion at Dundas this fall.
