E. ISLAND FRUIT GROWERS : Suggestions----Important | a Speeches. Valuable (_Actlon---Eloquent The annual meeting of the Fruit Grows ere Association of Prince Edward Island was held in Kindergarten Hall vesterday afternoon at 3 o’clock sharp. Mingled with the officers and associates were a number of members of the Legislacure. His Honour Lieutenant Governor Howlan occupied the chair. The eecretary, Mr. Henry Burke, read the minutes of the annual and intermediate meeiings, which upon motioa were unamimously «udopted. A most important matter in the bistory of the Association—its proper legal consti tution=-was then disétisseu; snd upod mo- tion of Rev. Father Burke, seconded by E. Bayfi- d Eeq, it was decided to petition | Parliament for an act of incorporation. Rev. Father Burke spoke strongly of the importance of fruit-growing and the neces sity of incorporating the association, that it might fulfil theend for whichit was establialied, being properly organized, and assisted by the Government. He declared that ary practical means of assisting so deserving an industry as fruit raising would be far more serviceable to the country thaa the spending of large sums of money upon a numberof exhibitions, which, in our restrictel circumstances as a province, particularly, were not at all giving results forthe amourts expended. He cited the practice jn Ontaric, where agrant of $1,000 was made to the Provincial Fruit Growers’ Seciety to be used in favoring experiments, printing reports and literature upoao horti- culture aud paying official expenses. He | hoped to see our Association put npon 4 proper footing and made of rome use to the country. This was the moment to do so. He moved the following resolution: * Resolved, That it is the opinion of this meeting chat the Governmeut of the Pro- vince should recognize and assist with a money grant the P. E. Island Fruit Growers Association proportional at least tothe recognition and assistance given Fruit Growers Associations by the Gov- eromente of the other provinces.” After some discussion participated in by Messrs E. Bayfield, Burke and others the resolution was put and carried without a dissenting voice. A committee composed of Rey. A. E. Burke, Jo-eph Wise, Esq., M. L. A. THE CONCERT OF LAST EVENING. A large and delighted audience rewarded the efforis of Miss Hill and those associa ted with ber in tne concert at St. Paui’s Schoolroom last evening. Indeed the con cert has been voted one of the best of the season. The opening vocal quartette was perhaps the weakest number of an alto- gether excellent programme, Miss. P. Large and Mr. Vinnicombe contributed violia eolos, the one with feminine grace and delicacy of expression, and the other with the rare skili and power for which he has long been remarkable; while Mr. Ernest Hill played as a cello-solo Mendell- shon’s “QU rest m the Lord” to the great satisfaction of all those who admire that musical gem. A siring trio by Miss Hornsby and Messrs James Hyndman aod Eraest H.ll was also ex- ceedingly well rendered. The vocal soloists were Miss Winifred Co:ton, Miss Annie Hyodmanand Miss Liliaa Dodd, Mr. Ernest Hill and Mr. Leslie Cook. The young ‘adies exhibiied the excellent results of skiifui and careful vocal culture superadded to natura) musica! ability, and each Was enthusiastically and deservedly encored. As for the young gentlemeu both have capital voices, ihe full powers of which have yet to be developed. Both ate somewhat wanting in respect to articu'ation and both need to cultivate the ability to sustain their notes. We bope that youeg Jade: and \oung ge:tlemen, alike, will contiaue tse pract.ce which makes tor perfection in the delightful art in which twneir early efforts exhibit so much premise. The music was pleasingly varied by readings by Mr. Bell. M.L. A., Judge Fitegerald and Mr. Fritz Moore. For the closing selection there was r2adered an instrumental quartette, by Haydn in which Messrs Vinnicombe, Gaudet, Stewart and Hilltook part. The harmony of thie was | pertect and inthe bighest degree pleasing | to every jover of muvic. We hearity congratulate Miss Hill, Mr. Vinuicomb-s, and others who contributed to the distinct success of last evenins’s entertainment, ~~ _— — PERSONAL. Mr. W. F.
