Tue Regular Convocation of Port la Joie Encampment will be held at Odd Fellows’ Hall to-morrow (Wednesday) at 8 o'clock. We learn that Mrs. O'Halloran intends erecting a fine bric’s building on the site of the wooden one recently Cestroyed, next the Union Bank. Crrizens living in the vicinity of Euston greet and Malpeque Road were treated to the oud, if not elegant, singing of a few vocalists jast midnight. The little troupe did not re- ceive an encore. Tue tickets for the Oddfellows’ entertain- ment on Saturday evening next (Natal Day) are selling very fast. It is expected that the Summerside band will accompany Prince Ed- ward Lodge to this city. Wow tp it not be well if the city fathers would bestow a little attention to our public squares. Ata slight cost they could be made quite attractive, and not be as they are allow- ed at present to remain, real eye-sores. Tue lamp on Malpeque Road at the corner of the Christian Meeting House needs repair- mg. The glimmer frem it is exceedingly famt, and often on2 is required (if very in- quisitive) to strike a match in order to see if the gas is burning. Persons who arrived in this city to-day from Argyle Shore and from China Point, re- ort the ice between St. Peter’s and Governur’s fslands to be solid, and without any sign of breaking, thus, the harbor ice, which is float- ing out rapidly, will have no means of escape, and navigation cannot be open for some days yet. DORSEY & JOST. April 10, 1879--ar ne pat till Ist may A Bosroy man named Josiah Bacon was found dead on the floor of his room in Bald- win’s Hotel, San Francisco, on Sunday last, with a pistol shot wound in his abodomen. He was the Treasurer of the Goodyer Dental Vuleanite Co., and is supposed to have been murdered by a dentist named Chalfant, from whom he was attempting to collect a biil. The affair produces great excitement in Bos- ton. Mrs. Tuomas Farris, aged 100 years and and 29 days, died at Grandpre, N. 5., on the 18th inst. Her father fought in the Contin- ental Army during the revolutionary war, was taken prisoner at Bunker Hill, and sent to Halifax, from whence he made his escape; when, after many dangers and difficulties, he reached his home, and found his wife, who supposed him dead, married to another man. Unlike Enoch Arden, he made himself known and the choice being left to the wife, she de- cided in favor of the lover of her youth. Paper MAKING AND THE Tari¥rF.—The Napanee Mills Paper Company were surprised one day last week at receiving a letter from Boston, Mass., asking tenders for 200 reams of paper at the mill, and 200 reams delivered at Belleville. Inquiry showed that a patent medicine proprietor in the States was arrang- ing for the printing of circulars, etc., for his Canadian trade in Canada, thus giving employ- ment to our own printers and paper makers, instead of those in Boston, as was done under the Cartwright tariff. This is a direct result of the National Policy. Score another gain.— Napwnee Standard. The value of American manufactures ex- rted was three times as large in 1878 as in 1860, and more than eight times as large as in 1850. The value of such exports in- creased from $76,916,659 in 1870 to $135,- 171,921 in 1878, an increase of $58,256,262, of 46 per cent. This increase was more rapid than that of the exportation of agri- cultural products during the same period. ---———- +> + > -o eo Special Notices. ORANGES by the box at Beer & Goff's. Geo. W. Hodgson. To the Editor of the Examiner. Sin,—Referring to Mr. Hyndman’s letter in your issue of yesterday, I have to say that if my memory serves me rightly, the charge brought by me against some of the breweries was @ more serious one than your report made it to appear, My main charge was that I knew of brew- erles where, at almost any time, beer had been purchased by the glass, as at a tavern. I can only say that I did not make this statement without having had positive and certain information that this had been done ; and the only thing that kept me from specify- ing where this had occurred was that I did not feel at liberty to name my informant. I am quite ready to believe that the propri- etors of the breweries give directions to their servants to obey the laws. But, should their servants disobey those directions, the propri- etors are, both legally and morally, respon- sible for what is done. One of the strong motives that leads :nany of us to support the Canada Temperance Act is, that we see that the men who have the traffic in hand are often unable, even when willing, to keep the trade withjn the wide limits which the present law gi¢es. I am, Sir, Your obedient servant, GEORGE W. Hopgson. April 22, 1879. —_- Suggestions—Agriculture. To the Editor of the Examiner. Mr. Eprror,—From tine Card of the Leader of the Local Government, it may be inferred that the policy of this Government will be to assist agriculture as well as other interests. Now, we urgently require a change of seed in potatoes, and a good stud horse or two ani- mals comprising muscle and enough of blood to give action and fair speed. The Clydesdale are too dull, and trotting stock are too light for ordinary purposes. JI have noticed, both here and abroad, that horses weighing from 1000 to 1200 lbs., of good appearance and fair average speed, command most money. We want a larger breed of sheep, and white oats are wanted at a good price in the West Indies. Supply the right kind of seed, and this Province can produce oats that will, as the Yankee puts it, ‘‘lick all creaton.” Some thing should be done towards producing a larger breed of cattle, as it costs nearly as much to carry a small ox to London as a large oue. The Government of New Brunswick are importing a quantity of beet root seed. They would probably sell us a sufficient quantity to test the capabilities of our soil for the growth of the sugar beet. With good management {the cost of seed and cattle could be received back into the treasury, as the seed could be sold for about cost, and the services of the cattle would leave but little of loss in this matter. If anything is done, it must be at- tended to at once, I may add that many of our poorer farmers sold out their potatoes last fall, aud a supply of seed, for which they could pay for in the fall, would be a boon to them. Yours respectfully, H. Coomss. Ch’town, April 21, 1879. “HOTEL ARRIVALS. | REVERE HOUSE. April 22—A. J. Ross, Summerside; Charles Gyde, Montreal; S. A. Simson, Pictou; H.
