Coiitinuod friim pm 1 now is: Where should the floor price be set in order to pay the producer a suitable amount for its production and at the same time provide the" Canadian con- sumer with a sufficient annual supply? No Cheese Contract The high price of cheese in the Marltknes this past sian-met was due to the large amount which was under contract from Canada. and most especially, to the re- uiaitionlrig order which was af- ectlve from May lst until Octo- ber 31st, in an attempt to fill that contract. At the present time no cheese contract has been signed with the British Ministry and even if there will he ii contract it is understood the cheese will not be requlsltloned. The difference between the Canadian and con- tact price became so great last year that the requlsitioning order was very unpopular inthore prov- inces subjected to it. It can easily be seen. therefore. that the cheese producers in the Marltlmos will experience I. considerable loss in demand with a consequent lower- ing in price if there is no con- tract this coming summer. Unless there is an Increase in the con- tract price requlsltlonlng is unfair at present. The contract price nlus subsidy has always been a floor 0n cheese and unless there is a contract there will be no floor. Without requlsltioplng there will be plenty competition on the markets. poor demand, and a much lower price than this past summer. The cheese manufactur- ers should consider these effects seriously at this convention. New Storage Packaging Room The dalrymen of the Province. realizing the need for adequate storage adopted a resolution at their last annual convention re- questing the Government to con- struct a suitable storage for butter and more space for cliccse. This storage is now completed. but due to circumstances beyond control. it was not on time to store this year's sur-plus production. Rooms most satisfactory for dairy pro- ducts and capable of holding our entire surplus have been built an- nexed to the original storage. In addition to this a packaging room for reworking butter into the trade has also been constructed. Th-ls packaging room is very suit- sbly built and should be able to do its partlri supplying our print markets throughout the whole year. We understand that ar- rangements should- be made with the Department of Industry and Natural Resources relative to the operation of the plant, This is a matter for consideration at your present convention. According as the price of butter advance. the greater does the smart. hnndhags noomy. mu ilc spread become betweefi it and margarine. The greater the spread in price. the more aitbetiteite is sold. owing to the difficulty in pl -' ' , utter to meet this un- fair price competition. a resolut- ion could be adopted at this con- vention asking that a duty be placed on the imported oils and fats from which this substitute is made or an excise tax be placed on its manufacture in order that the price may permit a satisfact- ory ptoductlon and sale of butter.
