They are not broad and flat, but long, narrow and the edges are toothed. That is why Sawbtll has been given that name. Old Mother Nature has given them such bills so that they can hold on to a fish when they catch it Blacky had seen sawbili dive and come up with a small fish. Sawblll held it up for Blaoky to see then swallowed it. That was a mean thing to do. Of course. Isn't it queer how folks sometimes like to tease other folks at a. time like this? Biacioy remembered that farther down the Big River there was more open water. He decided that he would go down there and leave this place to Sawhill and his friends. "Cow. cow, cow!" cried mucky. and spread his black wings. He bent his way up higher in the air. Then of course he could look down on the water and see farther ahead. What was that down on the water at the edge of the ice at the low- er end of the open space? It show- ed white in the morning sun. Was it Just a little piece of ice floating there? Was it-Blacicy didn't real- ly believe it could be. but it might be. Blacky flew a little faster. The nearer he got the more it looked as if it might be what he hoped it was He was sure now that ltvw.asn't a bit of ice. He flew down and light- ed on the ice close to the edge right where that gleaming white thing was. ' Now Hlacky's eyes sparkled. It was a small fish on its back so that it's white belly gleamed in the sun. It was a fish that had been caught by one or the Mergansers and then not eaten. In his haste to get that fish out of the water Blacicy aimmt fell in. Yes. sir, Biacky almost tumbled in head, first, The first time he failed to get hold of that little fish and ' for an instant it seemed as if it might be carried un- der the ice. His heart sank. It would be dreadful to find a break- fast and then to lose it almost as soon as he had found it. The next time he tried to pick it up he was more careful. He pulled it out on the ice. He carried it a little back from the water. or course that fish couldn't get -back in the water, but Blacky wasn't taking any chances. It didn't take him long to swal- low that little fish. What a diifer- erlce a full stomach makes! The whole world was changed. The wa- ter didn't look no black and cold after all. He didn't shiver now when he looked at it. It was fun to be alive. He didn't care how cold the wind might be. He no longer had any foolish wishes that he was like some one else, that he could swim and dive like sawbill. He was .perfect.iy satisfied to be simply Blacky the crow. LOTTETOWN g , U KING or Al. MOUNTED i ..
