The guest pews were marked with sprigs of baby's breath, bachelor's buttons and white ribbon. The wedding music was played by Mrs. Keith Rogers. During the signing of the register Miss Nancy Mac- Nevin sang ”I'll Walk Beside You" and "0 Perfect Love." The bride, given in marriage by her brother-in-law, Mr. Vernon Duck of York, chose it floor-lcngthi gown of white not over satin with tulle inserts. It was not complicated by the many forces outside the school and the home, which today compete with parents and teachers for the minds of the young. There was the world of nature and the con- versation of elders, but not radio. movies, and television. it was a much easier task to educate the child of a generation ago. Know- ing schools. teachers, and com- pany, nne could be fairly sure of the direction of a child's educa- tion. But that's all gone, and now it is a tough job to keep pace with the influences to which a child is subjected. Take for example advertising: the fabulous cam- paign against modern man in make him dissatisfied with his lot, and to show him nil the things he must have in order in be happy. (Happiness, of course. is to have the latest car, a TV set, and a fully equipped home in the suburbs). it promises a ma- tisra of net and held in place by lilies of the valley. She carried ii cascade bouquet of red roses. The bride was attended by her. sister. Miss Maude Macllachern of I-lniifsx, who wore a strapless floor-length gown of orchid net over satin with matching bolero, headdress and net mittens. she carried s. noscgay of mixed flowers, yellow being the outstanding color. The groom was supported by Mr. Lowell Balderston of North Wilc- shlrc. The ushers were Ml'. Roy Pursey of Charlottetown and Mr. William Baker of Murray Harbour. The bride's mother chose for her daughter's wedding is dras of navy blue with white accessories and ii corsage of white oamntions. The groom's mother wore v. dress of navy blue with while accessories and s. carriage of white carnstions. Following the ceremony 9. re- ception and buffer. luncheon was held for a. large number of friends and relatives at Villa Waters. Pink and while carnations and a three tier wedding- cake topped with miniature bride and groom adorn- ed the bride's table. During the reception, the groom's aunt. Mrs. Harold Carver, Hszelbrook, presid- ed at the organ. Rev. A. Frank MacLesn proposed the toast. to the bride which was cspably responded to by the groom. The toast to the bridesmaid was proposed by Mr. William Baker which was respond- ed to by the groomsman. Assisting in serving were a. number of friends of the bride-Misses Elsie Muoougull. Marie Tooic. Betty Proctor and Ens. Maonschern. Amid shcscra of confetti the couple left on a honeymoon trip through the Mai-itimcs. For trav- elling the bride chose a blue dress with white accessories and a cor- sage of white csrnstions. Prior to her marriage the bride was entertained by the staff of the Provincial Treasury at a treasure hunt and kitchen shower at stan- hopc Beach. also at s miscellan- eous shower given by her girl friends at. the home of Mrs. How- ard Mecbauchlan. on returning from their honey- moon the couple will reside in Charlottetown where they are both employed. teriai heaven, and makes its sp- posl mainly through sex. . . . How much influence docs vortising have on ii child. how much is be effected? cannot go out into the street without being subjected to ad- vertising in some shape or form. If he rides a streetcar, he is can- opied with ads; if he reads a magazine, his eyes take in more advertisement than literature; and in his home, radio and television vie with each other for the most alluring advertisement. A child could not but be deeply affected, were he only half alive. Most children can quote a half-dozen advertising slogans quite readily. There is no question, I think. about the powerful influence of movies in the education of chil- dren. If movies were all morally good, artistically excellent, and numerically controlled, they would be a wonderful educating medium which we would be glad to have for our children's sake. Unfortun- ately, some movies are immoral and very few are artistically ex- cellent. The glorification of crime infidelity, hatred of enemies. arr all presumed as a matter ni course. Parents indiscriminately allow their children to go to a show without so much as asking the name of the picture. Do we allow a child to drink from in medicine bottle without inquiry. or to eat anything that comes his way? ad- and Ho ese The latest and most powerful of the competing factors in edu- cation is television. it is a well- known fact that children. at least. in the United States, spend more hours per week in front of the TV set than they do in school. in the course of these many hours. they witness perhaps one good program among very many bad ones. And all the time subject to the intrepid hammer of ms- teriaiistic advertising. Television, of course, is marvelous, and a credit to our age. In the case of invalids and shut-ins it provides a wonderful diversion. But it is far from perfect. And we do not yet know what toll it will take of our children In health, discip- line. and power to think. ll HA9! im. can. You can enjoy any of these new home comforts by using our Easy Payment Plan-Up lo 24 Months to pay. It's as easy as The purpose of education sometimes stated as the effort to perfect an intellect and will, to think correctly, and to act rightly. Television, I'm afraid, is directly opposed to this twofold aim. it does all our thinking for us, it keeps us on the level of the im- agination, like children. The sus- tained effort to think and to de- xlop one's mind is becoming a re thing. e if is easy to be entirely passive and to watch; it is pleasant and amusing. But i venture to say that it is eating away at social life, that it is damaging human conversation and wit. and it is spawning a lazy and unsucisi gen- eration, which might. never reach mature manhood. It is a race ruled by the advertisers in a tyranny of the soul which is far worse than slavery. Parents and educators, then. have a much more difficult job on their hands than their own parents and educators had. it takes a much more alert and cau- iious effort to guide the young in the ways to true discipline and knowledge. it is not a case of cutting children off from the won- ders of our size; that would DP foolish and unjust. But it is si case of very serious obligation to the vigilant and firm in control- ling the influences on the mind of a child. Our age is remark- able for the care it takes of the human body. lmfortunsioiy, the same cannot be said of its care for the soul. 0 O A wise cduqstor knows that discipline is not taught by giving in to a child's every whim. And no child is grateful in later life PAGE THREE for being pampered. It is l'lCI love which refuses to be firn with an immature will; it is self love. A parent who loves hi. child will moderate and contra the desires of his child, especially in these educational influence. wherein lurk dangers both it body and to soul. Let parents then. stand up to the prohicn confronting them and not slim; their children to be overcome b; deceptive pleasures. The inspired writer "Where there is no vision, Ifil people perish." There is a danger that in the matter of education we are lacking vision, regarding both the aim of education and tho factors involved. it is not a sim- ple matter, it is complicated and crucial. wroii LONDON (OP)-sanitary inspec- tors here still bear the old omcia; title of "inspectors of nuisances.
