Panthers and the | Panther Coenas , Dear fellow hockey fan: I am glad that you have brought up the Pan- ther Lounge’s concern about student involvement... The Panther Lounge is not the only one. The temporary boost in school spirit is pre- cisely that, SHORT LIVED! I am really tired of the lack of support to the less pros- perous teams in this school. I have never seen a_ big- ger group of POOR LOSERS than here at UPEI. There is support when we win but nothing but jeers and taunts (even from President Elliot) when we are not so fortu- nate! School Spirit at UPEI needs more that a sporatic boost... it needs constant support and pride is one of the elements! I love this school but that doesn’t pre- vent me from being repulsed by the actions of some of the students ie. two members of the Mens Hockey team (one of whom is a former Cam- pus Police) were barred for BRAWLING at the Panther Lounge. First the two did the P.L. staff a great disservice Letters... o ® aide fy and put them in unneces- sary danger. It must be re- membered that these two are STUDENTS FIRST, ATH- LETES SECOND! I think that what they did to’ their fellow students (yes C.P. and Bartenders are students too) was .really LOW! It: only takes.a few BAD APPLES! IE have rarely missed an athletic event during :my 3 yrs. © at UPEI and IE have RARELY seen the Athletic Booster Club sponsor events at the Panther Lounge. The Panther Lounge does. need the support of the student body, that I don’t deny, but not at the cost of éompromis- ing the safety of its patrons or staff. I am in full sup- port.of the Judicial Board’s decision, and I repremand yoursuggestion that a dou- ble standard be expected for these two culprits’ or any other member of the; UPEI population! How can puni- tive action be taken se if it has no effect, Ifkewise, how ean behavior chahge if it goes unpunished? : As for the BOYCOTT of the Panther Lounge, fit only YOUR FORUM FOR DISCUSSION. Signed, Sorry you missed the PARTY AT THE BARN, | Carla with a K. Dear Editor: In response to the letter to the editor of March 17 re- garding Hockey Panthers not being allowed into the Pan- ther Lounge: Why should there be an exception make for anyone — just because they are one of the Hockey Panthers? Just because there are two no-minds on the team doesn’t mean the school spirit should be damp- ened. I disagree with the statement regarding the to- , getherness between the team members, the university stu- dents, professors, ers,. and the surrounding community. If you took a survey at a hockey game you would see that there is a very low percentage of stu- dent support with the major- support- Featuring THE BEST IN ‘ ADULT ENTERTAINMEN 2 Monday Night! | The World 4 Famous Comedy Cabaret ox ae 2 100 de tts 3 FULL TWO HOUR SHOW STARTS AT 9:30 | Doors open at 8:30 — Tickets on sale all day at Front Desk Adult Comedy at its Best! f —A Rodd Classic Hotel — Rodd Inns-Resorts-Hotels TERT ag LAY oe eh eb eek ity being from the commu- nity. I be- lieve there shouldn’t have been an exception made — they are simply like the rest of us and I’m sure they wouldn’t make an exception for anyone else. And why should they? We don’t mean to pick on the Panthers, as a whole. It wasn’t the fault of the Panther Lounge but the in- dividuals whose irresponsible and immature actions caused the change in plans to party at the Barn. Face it, guys, your two team members ru- ined the night for you. —A non-hockey fan who didn’t get to party at My- rons. PS: I also was not. im- pressed at the actions by the staff of Myrons that night. I waited in line for 45 minutes before leaving only after the Hockey Panthers had walked right in past all of us without having to wait in line. They made it to the CIAU’s be- fore — what makes this time so special? LEAS ORL TIEE ECE LL IE POO DE ITE, Dear Editor: Last week’s GEM _ in- cluded a letter to the edi- tor written by “A Hockey Fan Who Celebrated At My- ron’s”. This person believed that two members of the hockey team deserved spe- cial treatment the night the Panthers won the AUAAs and should have been al- lowed into the Barn. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. I don’t know why the two hockey players were banned from the Barn and I don’t care. If they were any other students, they’d have been kept out, and. that’s that. What the Barn did, “Hockey Fan”, was make a policy decision not based on favouritism, or even on _ money. Alan MacEachern P.S. Why people so shy about signing their names to these letters? are “Hockey Fan’, what are you embarassed about? Page ¢ S-Sen— Letters must be ‘women is Faculty In-fighting Dear Editor: The article which was ‘published in this paper on March 10th by Mujeeb Rah- man was a clear example of a smear campaign. It is filled with veiled innuendo and im- plied judgement. Indeed, if there were any valid criti- cisms to be made of the re- search on sexual harassment done by his collegues, Beth Percival and Don Mazer of the psychology department, they could ,have been made in the more appropriate fo- rum of the recent faculty pre- sentation on sexual harass- ment. To suggest that psy- chological research involving willing volunteers is a form of voyerism is to suggest that all research is such and to im- ply that it stop. So much for scholarly inquiry. To suggest that sexual harassment is just another term for courting shows a poor understanding of what sexual harassment is and overlooks the pressing and persistent and UNWANTED aspect of it. To suggest that ‘“sneak- ing in” questions having ‘to do with attitudes toward irrelevant also shows a profound lack of un- derstanding. Sexual harass- ment is directly connected to the social context to which it occurs. To ignore attitudes toward women is to overlook one of the prime causes of sexual harassment. If there is any question of unethical behaviour it seems to lie in the direction of Pro- fessor Rahman.
