ARTIFICIAL IMYLIGHT.
What promises again to revolution-
ise the lighting of buildings and streets
is Nikola Teslafs artificial daylight.
His own brief description of the sys-
tem is “vacuum tube lighting by high
frequency currents.” In plain Eng-
lish the tubes are of glass and have
the air pumped out of t-hem, and then
an electric current-, supplied by a spe-
cial dynamo is applied which causes
the tube to glow and burn, shedding
a radiance like daylight all around.
It is claimed that this new light _dif-
fuses itself like the daylight in every
part of a. room, and in the recesses
and alleys of a street, being apparent-
ly as strong as immediately under the
tube.
No heat is produced, the vacuum
tube being always cool. It is claim-
ed by Tesla that in incandescent
lighting 97 per (cent of the electric
‘current goes to making the Element
hot, leaving but 3 per cent for ills-
uination. The vacuum tubes can be
attached to the electriciixtures in com-
mon uso, but cannot be illuminated
by the ordinary current. It will re-
quire the introduction of new plant,
_wit-li the special dynamo for producing
the high frequency current. Capital
will speedily supply this and is is
prelicted that the -new light must
quickly supplant the best of those
now in use. It is also claimed that
while the cost ._of 'wi`res,' tubes. &c.,
will be about the same as in incandes-
lcent lighting the cost of operating
will be much less. The vacuum tubes
can never burn out.

Now that the esteemed editor of
the Patriot is studying his dictionary
we have great hope of improvement
in him. A
Frequent references have been
made in our dospmtches to the con-
troversy about Dead Man’s Island.
The island in question is adjacent to
Vancouver, and is claimed as city
property. Some time ago one Thee-`
dore Ludgate of Chicago got a lease
of the island from the Militia Depart-_
ment at Ottawa for a. term of years,
the island being controlled by that-
department as ordnance property.
So when Mr. Ludgate was about to
set up a. saw-mill on the island, by
virtue of his lease he was forbidden
by the Mayorof Vancouver. In foot
Ludgate, and thirty of his men were
arrested as trespassers; At latest
accounts the city was holding pos-
session of the 'island and the lessee is
.2 oking to Ottawa for redress. '
The Lake City lynching trial down
in South Carolina. has some peculiar
features. A colored man having been
appointed postmaster of the town was
set upon by the mob who took his
life, shot his wife and wounded his in-
fant child. When the perpetrators
were brought to trial-it appears
they included a number of “ leading
citizens”-the proceedings were very
affecting. The recital of the killing
produced copious weeping. "The judge
wept. the jury wept, the lawyers
wept and the defendants wept. In
factalmost everybody was bathed in
tea.r.=.” So runs the newspaper story
of the trial. And then the jury dis-
agreed, and the prospect is that no
one will be punished. We don’r. weep
so much over our murderers up here
in Ca \ada, but we do hang them til
they are dead.

has now approached so far toward
perfection as to be of use tothe world. J
