A few of the more salient features of the situation may be here set down. China is a vast and populous country as every one knows, but the district immediately affected by the present trouble may be said to be the . *Province of Pechili, in the northeastern part of the Empire and adjoining the Gulf of the same name. The Province has an area of 59,000 square miles and a popu- kblhs of China and the great density of _ population is accounted for in part by the number of large cities which it contains. Chief inlimportance among these is Pe- king, thcicapital of China, with a popula- tion estimated at from 500,000 to 1,500,000. Tien Tsin, mentioned frequently in the despatches. has nearly a million inhabit- ants. There are a number of other very large cities in the Province. Tien Tsin, is situated on the Peiho River,` which river is: guarded at its mouth by the famous Taku forts. 'A railway 78 miles in length connects Tien Tsin with Peking, Sixty miles north of Peking the great wall, one of the wonders of the World, stretches its vast length of 1800 miles _from the sea to the far interior of_tlie lcountry. The armed strength of China is given at 031,400 men of whom half a. million belong 'to the second reserves and 31,000 to the first reserves. This leaves the regular establishment in time of peace at about 100,000 men. That a portion of the re- serves have been already called out is r shown by the statement that 100,000 men are now on guard about Peking alone. The naval strength of China was considerable before the war of 1894 withJapan in which ' her best battleships and cruisers were either sunk, destroyed or captured. Japan alone is now tenfold stronger as a. sea power than China. M ` The situation as at present revealed _ alia'-vs ttf?
