John vt, 85-Commentary Pr-ogurnd hy Btn D. I. Stearns. lvmrlras. U04. by Ami-ies ma unmumi The miracle of today's lesson is also recorded by Mark and Luke and John and is the only miracle, apart from Hia resurrection, which is recorded by tho four evangsllsts. Most helpful heart words for us are found ln verses 16, 18, conceming the multitude. representing all multitudes, “Give ye them to eat," and concerning the material on hand to be used, “Bring them hither to me." We who have received the Lord Jesus. the True Bread, are expected to tell others of Him that they also may re- ceive Him, but the hungry multitudes unsogreaganditisaomucheaalerto our self indulgent, indolent natures to let them alone or send them away, and we have so little time or strength oi- money to do anything with, that in our eyes the ease is altogether hopeless. But if we wil only surrender our little all to Him o can make much out of little and at things out of nothing He is the me miracle worker still. The apostles told Jesus all that they had done and taught. The disciples ef John also told Jesus after they had buried the body of John (Matt. xlv, 12; Mark' lv, 80). lt is an excellent habit no tell Him everything (Phil. iv, I, 7). J esul and Hia disciples had noleimre so much as to eat, there were so raany coming and going, so He took them apart into a desert place to rest, but the multitude followed Him. and He received them and spake unto th ot the kingdom of God and healed them that had need of healing, for lo was moved with compassion toward them (Mark vi, 81-84; Luke ix, 11). He had ao pity for Himself, but He was full of pity for these sheep wlthoat a skep- herd even though, or because, He how their motives ln following Him (John vi, 2). How unlike we are to our Har terl When the kingdom comes, beth body and soul shall be perfectly healed. for Hia great atonement covers our whole being; but for the body just like His we must wait till the resurrection of the just at Hia coming (Phil. iii, Z), 21; I John ill, 2, 8). Not ull the glorious things of the kingdom, of which Jesus had been speaking, nor the mighty works which they had seen Him do could make even the twelve forget that they were weary, hungry men in mortal bodies, rnd ao, as the evening was coming on. they ventured to suggest to our Lord that He should send the multitude tway that they might buy themselves vlctuals. It must have been to their very great surprise that the Lord laid, “They need not depart; give ye them to eat” (venes 15, 16). Then we have the strangest possible Philip and Andrew brotherhood, sn unbelieving pair, after whom it is to be hoped that the so called brotherhood of today does not pattern. Our Lord knew just what He would do; He always does, and if we had anointed enrs we would often hear Him tiny, “Now shalt thou see what I When in our daily life He allows ua ,to come into a strait place, a dltiicuity, a perplexlty, it is simply to prove ua al He proved Philip, to lee whether we will attempt to work our way out, as Philip did, or turn to Him with confl- dcnce in Hia ability, aa Philip might have done. Andrew speaks of that which is in aight, tive loaves and two small fishes, but adds. "What are they among so many?" Both of them seem tn have utterly forgotten who Jesus was and what they had seen Him do. How very like them we are apt to be, for, no matter how many times we have been delivered, when n new trial comes we are apt to act and talk like the ten spies rather than like Caleb and Josh- us. We all needto profit by Zech. lv, 8, 7, 10, and learn to fear no mountain and not to despise little things. Having received from the lad his lit- tle all and the multitude being seated on the green grass by fifties in a com- pany, He looked up to heaven and gpvo thanks and blessed and brake the loaves and by the disciples passed them to the multitude, and all did eat and were tllled, and twelve baskets of frag- ments were gathered. It does not seem so wonderful when we remember who it was that did it, even the same one who fed a hundred men with twenty loaves in the days of Elisha (II Kingl lv, 4244) and fed millions with manna ln thewlldernesa for forty years. Why can we not trust Him now? When we place ourselves as unreservedly in Hia hands al the lad did the loaves and dshes then shall we see what Ke will do. He could have fed them with manna from heaven, but His ordinary way ll to use human instrumentality. We each have the opportunity which the lad had to place our all in Jelua’ lalll. reserving nothing, but who ia willing thus to consecrate himself to the Lord? (I Chron. xxlx, 5). There is no ead. there is no limit. to the uae and the blessing which He may make of ul when we are frilly surrendered to Him. He gave Himself to be broken and poured forth for us. Why should we hesitate no place ourselves in Hia hand! most nnreaorvedly that we may be blamed and broken and passed round by Him for the life of others? The next miracle in this chapter ll a plo- ture of the church in this age, boiling in rowing, the wind contrary, and ,Jesus absent; but He sees and cans. and lo will como again in the mera- lng watch. and than immediately we lhall be at our destination. forever with the Lord (John Yi. 21). llaanwhilo Ile hearing, “loefgooiichaer.ithI;\e ant shall."
