The old ball game hung in the balance on both plays. Did we hear one time of a fellow called "scoreless" Gay, or did w. Just dream that one up? Must have 9' drew. because Garth came through with three goals that night, and also had an assist. We always figured Garth to be a great defens. lve forward. but were not exactly sold on his goal-getting abilities, Gay seems to be getting his share 0f iloals lately. however, and that in our book makes h‘m a mighty Vllllllble Player to any team in these parts. Congratulations to Frankie Oat- way on his three-point lead-in the scoring derby of the ‘Charlottetown Clly League. We hope he holds it and thlnk he has a. pretty fair chance. with one game with cm.- Navy down here in Surnmerslde. Blinking the red light in the Cry- stal Rink has got to be a regular lsuteblt with the Steele-Mclver All- ars. Noiw for the other side of the picture. It looks as li.’ the boys have lost the fine edge they had two or three weeks ago. If they were Playing the brand of hockey which they played when they defeated .the Saints and Welshmen in Sum- merslde and lost, a to 6. to Amherst, we can't see that the present edit- ion of s.D.U. would ever lead them 7 to 4 half way through the third period and force them to put on that scoring splurge to snatch vic- tory from defeat. If the Saints. minus Cart McDonald. Mike Hen- nessey and Ayers, can make things that interesting for our bays, it looks as if the All-Stars are not in first-class fighting trim. For one tiling, we tliink the local defence would be strengthened by putting Carl Woodside behind the blueline. Carl was in that position for two games and received a lot of favorable comment from the fans. He's young. fast and rugged, and needs only a little more experience to make n first-class rearguards- man. All our defencemen are past their peak, (though it must be ad- mitted some qf them are sweet hockey players yet) and it is about time we were develop’ a few younger players for chores be- hind the blue-line. Woodside is the best prospect i.n sight. We hope he gets a chance to prove this. We have just heard that Sum- merside gets a bye into the Prince Edward Island finals for the inter- mediate championship. This. we suppose. is the usual procedure in the case of last year's champs, but it isn't exactly what we wanted. The Ail-Stars have been having trouble getting games in the home rink 'snd this arrangement will malse things a bit worse Ln this re- gar . It seems too bad that the fans Ne‘ not backing up the Sheen 8s McInnis iuvenilu this year. The attendance at their games has been disappointingly meagre. and has provided little encouragement for the boys who are giving their best to keep Summerside in the juvenile hockey picture, and for Sheen d: Mclnnls who were sporting enough to back our juvenile representat- ives. so that our young hockey players might continue to develop for the intermediat or even sen- ior teams of the fu ure. Now that they've played all their home gun- es oi the regular league schedule, the next league fixtin-e here will in all probability be ‘a play-off affair. Turn out and see it. folks, and give these boys and their sponsors th; support they deserve. Who knows They may be the Maritime Champs of 1949. How about that meeting that was to be called to consider the build- ing of a new hockey rink in Sum- merside? There was a lot of talk about this around Chrlstanae. but we haven't heard a pew M‘ 80M time. Surely we are not going to let this matter, which concerns the welfare oi the youth of Summer- slde. to die by default. The grown- ups have been looked after hand- somely, but how about the kids’! Don't they rate a little attention too? The game had been delayed t5 minutes at the request of Stock- holm pollce who took no chances on a. repetition of Wednesday night's gate-mashing scenes when 14 persons were ‘injured after thousands of fans tried to get lnm the rink to watch Carlson. and Sweden play s. 2-2 tie. The delay gave police time to clear crowds away from outside Olymlplc Stadium. Heavy guards were posted inside and outside the big arena. The victory fanned Canadian hopes of retaining for Canada the world crown won a year ago by R C. A. F. Flyers. Canada now has three points with two games left to play against Austria and Swit- zcrland. ‘lihe Canadians must win their two remaining games to stay in the running. A crowd of 7.900 in Olympic Stadium saw the Wolves virtually eliminate the Americans from title contention. It was the second straight loss without a victory for the United States. Earlier, Sweden took the lead in the six-country round-robin tour- nament with e 3-1 decision over Switzerland. ‘Ilhe Swedes now have "V9 points with games re- maining against the United States and Czechoslovakia. ‘The Czechs. idle today, are in second place with four points, followed by Canada.
