Resisting the urgings of sonic of his relatives who were independent, that he should enter one of these colleges and undergo a training for the minis- try of that faith, he joined the congre- gation of the late Rev. Robert Hall, at Cambridge. Later young Spurgeon became a village pastor and tract dis- tributor at the little village of Fevers- ham, near Cambridge. He there be- came known as “the boy preacher” and in that village delivered his maid- en sermon. When but 17 years old he became pastor of a small Baptist chapel at Wadybeach, preaching in sharp to which great crowds flock- ed to hear him. The fame of his eloquence and earnestness spread rapidly and invitations to preach poured in upon him from all parts of England. In 1853 Mr. Spur- goon made his first appearance be- fore s London congregation, and so pronounced was his success that it was found necessary to enlarge the church building. While this was being done he preached in Exter Hall, and so great was his popularity that it was found necessary to turn away hundreds of those who crowded to hear him. In 1856 the “Tabernacle” was built to accommodate the con- stantly increasing numbers of Mr. Spurgeon’s congregation. Many hun- dreds of the great preacher’s sermons have been printed, not only in English, but in most languages of continental Europe. It is doubtful if any Eng- lish theologian of the time has more forcibly impressed his personality upon his generation than has the prea- cher whose death is hourly expected. . A LBERT i:nw.iRD’s TWO LIVES. After offering various suggestions as to the manner in which the Government might make the Prince a better and more useful man by setting him to work, Mr. Stead closes his article with the following words: _ “ The Prince of Wales at Sandringham is a different man to the Prince at Marl- borough House. “In his country place, in the bosom of his family, surrounded by those to whom he stands in neighborly relations and over whom he has the responsibility of his position, his life is 3 together different from that which he leads in town. “At Sandringham he is free and at the same time more conscious of his responsi- bility. Therefore he is less frivolous and more domesticated. As a landlord, those who visited Sandriiigham are loud in his praise. The cottages on his estate have excited the admiring remarks of the most radical of the Royal Commissioners on the Hoisng of the Poor, when they visited the Prince. “There is a general concurance r—f opin- ion that as a landlord, as an agriculturist and as a country gentleman the Prince sets an example which might be followed with advantage throughout the country. "Temperance reformers rejoice that he permits no public house on his estate, while reasonable men reflcct with satisfac- tion that he has provided an admirable substitute for the village tavern in the Sandringham Club. AS HUSBAND, FATHER AND BROTHER. “His worst enemi« s will admit that the Princc’s greatest failing arises from his too reat kindness of heart. However far short of the ideal standard he may fall in some respects. he is in others quite a devoted family man. His brothers ai~rl plistcrs are most affectioiiately attached to im. “His tenderness to his wife during her illness, his constant attention to her wants, the pains which he takes to keep her informed of all that is likely to amuse her, the interest which he always takes in the welfare of his children——thcse are all strangely at variance with the popular conception abroad." ._______}._—._..._.
