f ness a great transaction took ‘ place which issued in a world's the pledge of life. Lenten Meditations! from IThe Londcn Times GOOD FRIDAY All the conflicting and diverse elements of human experience find their centre in the mystery of Good Friday. Each of us, driv- en by need or obsessed by pride. may welcome or ignore the history it recalls. but sooner or later we find that the road we traverse takes us to the Cross. There it confronts us. We cannot ignore it. We must make up our minds about its claims rind its ivltness. There we learn that what we thought wns the symbol of defeat and death exerts a strange sovereignty‘ as if it were conscious of a right to be the very law of life to all men. Suffering is common to our race and in time of w-ar we are more deeply conscious perhaps of its painful intensity. It comes to all in divers forms which cmpilfis- ize its universality. The Cross completes the full circle of sor- row round human life. While it affirms the. dread fellowship of sin and suffering. it also shows liow innocence iriust share the world's anguish. It speaks in cos- mopolitan terms of suffering. so that everyone may understand its language and the appeal which it framed. But the Cross does something more than challenge our respons- ive sympathy. There in the dark- redemption. it may baffle our minds when we attempt to describe it or to formulate theories to ac- count for it. The Christian Church regards the Cross as the means of DiPlne forgiveness. as it is most surely the fount of penitence. The Gross shows that nobility must be measured by service and self-sacrifice. The King whose throne is the Cross offers men a share in His Passion, hut they must shore His defeat if they would share His victory. But in the record of two milleniums it has never been found that a man who has served His sorrow has ever failed to attain His triumph. That is the paradox of the Cross. It is at once the gauge of suffer- ing and the pledge of victory. 1t ls the instrument of death and HINTS 0N ETIQUITTE ‘Iflie inner envelope of a wedding invitation should bear the name of the person to whom it is sent, but not the address.
