WOMEN INA SEXIST SOCIETY by Irene Toye (The Lexicon) Sexism (YES! it still out there and alive and kicking!) and this patriarchal society has reduced womyn to be arace of children to be taken care of babydolls made of ‘‘ sugarand spice and everything nice.’’ We are pampered, we are worshipped and adored. But, we are also kicked, slapped, raped and abused. We area lot of things, aren’t we? So, what ever happened to respected and highly regarded? Doesn’t thatcome with the package deal? Nobody wants to admit it. but this is reality. We make up more that 50% of the poor-we still only make 60 cents on every dollar that a man makes and exactly HOW many womyn have positions as CEOs? We are seen as emotional, meek and high strung. No, not exactly the most flattering picture is it? We are still seen as subordinate to men. It’s not as bad as it used to be but as long as that kind of attitude still exists, we have to keep fighting back. Needless to say, the womyn’s liveration movement is not over yet. The problem is too many people think that we have already won the battle for equality. Yes, we do have the right to vote, and we do get ‘‘equal pay for equal work’’ (at least in principal anyway). And yes, we are defined as people (OH! WHATA PRIVILAGE!). BUT as long as we are still leered at on the street, and objectified , as long as we and those around us still believe that our value measured by our waxed on beauty, as long as we still make up 65% of the poor, as long as we’re still exploited, working in job gettos and stopped from getting those big corner officesby the glass ceiling, as long as we’re still afraid of walking through an undergrounf garage or through a park after dark, as long as we’re too scared to end a relationship with our boyfriends or lovers, as long as womenare still being discriminated against, raped, murdered, victimized...
