Some years ago the painful duty devolved upon Tris Guminiss to record the conviction of the Chief of the Fire Department of this city for selling liquor in violation of the Canada Temperance Act, then in force here. At that time we pointed out the influence such an ex- ample set by a prominent civic otlicial must necessarily have in leading others to commit like acts of lawlessness. We also pointed out that should the offender be subsequently convicted of a third of- fence, the penalty for which would be imprisonment, the city would be placed in the perilous position of having one of its servants in jail when at any moment his services might be most urgently needed for the protection of the property .ofour sitiggiillpiinst fire. In view of -V the gravity of the oti`enC£ 99!!}l!lll'§¢d and t the City Council to dismiss the head of the Fire Department and appoint a com- , peterit, la\v~abi'1ing citizen to that ,-‘position in his stead. _ T It is needless to say that in so advising we were animated by no feeling of private lllwill or animosity against the Chief, but = solely by what we conceived to be the welfare and safety of the city. But the City Council did not act upon our advice; N on the contrary they continued in otilce Having purchased from -Mr. F. And this has occurred almost at the time when the destruction of the pump- _ ing station exposed the city to unusual iperil from fire, rendering it im- perative that the Fire Department newsstand willbe a special featurelshould be in a state of the of the business.
