Such was the decision arrived at yesterday after a conference between Professor J. W. Robertson, Dr. Ander- son, and some of the loading mea of the schools districts of Lots 48 and 49 tbai will be united by the bensiloenoe of Sir William Macdonald. In conversation with Professor Robertson last evening The Guardian was given the details that had been arranged as the results of his visits to the interest- ed localities and his conference with the residents. “The consolidated school which it was at ilrs: proposed to have been built at Hazelbrook," he said, “was to Le an objeotlesscn to the entire province. ` Those interested in the educational development of the Island would watch its success sind according to to the measure of its progress they would more extensively adopt the idea of consolidation. . The site atllilaxeibrook would be the geometric centre of the nine or ten districts that would be embraced in the »plau of union. But there were geographic diillcuities to be encountered and the districts of Pownal, Mount Melliok and Alexandra ccuid only reach the school at Haaslbrocr _by long hills which would make much gnpater the cost ci conveying the chlldrenas well as 'render the trips to some extent dangerous. .There was also s wish among thsrssidente of Mount Herbert ahd Bunbury to have the school further north, while those in Pownal, Alexandra and contiguous districts naturally would like to avoid the up hill haul which would be necessary were the location at Haaslbrook chosen. These problems confronted Professor Robertson when he came tothe Province. A school at Hazelbrook built under those circumstances would not be assured of the success that] should attend such au undertaking. The question was fully discussed yesterday afterucon`and the unanimous opinion was in favor of two schools, one located at Mount/Herbert and the other at Pownal. These wiibe smaller than the proposed Hazelbrook school but are certain to be operated with a greater measure of success. The Mount Herbert school will include Cross Roads, Bunbury, Fuilerton's Marsh, Bethel, Hazelbrook; and the one at Ladies’ Dnngola Kid laced Boots Made by the J. D. Captain Nashiba was one of the advisory stud’ of Admiral Toga, and thought much of by the Japan- ese naval ad ministration. Pownal will be a centre for Alexandra, Mt. Meiiiok, Mount Albion, part oi Cross Roads and Village Green, (lf the rate- payers desire to ainalgamate ) This arrangement, it is hoped, will give .renerai satisfaction. The districts will provide the sites and the schools will be built and equipped from the Macdonald Fund. Each school will have from 175 to 200 pupils. School Gardkningand Nature Study will be departments in each school while# in Pownal will be House- hold Science and fin Mt. Herbert Manual Training in addition. Publis cf the higher grades will have the advantages of both by interchamzing between the schools. ' _ It is expected that the work of con- struction will be shortly commenced and an effort will be made to have the schools opened this fall. Professor Robertson dwells with par- ticular cmphssis upon the purposes of the Macdonald Fund. The consolidated school work isa partnership scheme. The Macdonald Fnnd, the people whose childre ren attend the echool, and the pcoplelollthe entire province are the parties interested. The schooiis bulltand furnished hy the Fund, the people by their enthusiasm in the proiect can furnish an illustration to the province of its good work. The scale of the expenditure in the construct on and furnishing of these experimental schools must be such that it will he within the reach of others who will later build schools. - The organization and maintenance of these experimentalschools must be for three ydars on such a moderate scale that the people themselves can *maintain their eiliciency when they take charge at the end cf three years. Professor Robertson will visit Mount Herbert and Pownal again today and point out sites that would he good ones for the schools. I-Ie leaves on Saturday morning on return to Ottawa and will revisit the Province in August. Ou Wednesday the Professor visited the schools at Kensington, Emerald.
