MYTH YORK, England, March 8-(By The Canadian Press)-The “Holy Well," at Yorkm nster is declared to be a myth and s, suggestion that the York Minister authorities have organized pilgrimages to the site of an alleged historical and sacred place in the Minster which never existed is made by Rev. Angelo Ezine, of York, n well-known an- tiquarian- who has made a study of the clty's early churches. His state- ment had reference to a. recent book written by Cnnc/n'Bell, Pre- ccnior of York Minister, on "Holy \Veli." During recent excavations in the crypt there was discovered the lop of what looked like a. holy water stoup, which, lt was said, was the font at which _the pagan Northum- brlan King Edwin was baptizl/ed by Paullnus in 627. V Mr. Raine claims that there is :not the slightest justification for th‘s. The place, he says, never oncc received mention in any old rc- rords. There is nothing to show that this was ever s holy site, and the tradition is of modem origin, nnly l00 years old. Recent excava- tions, he says, proved once and for all that there was 'no holy wcll on this spot in 627 when Edwin was baptized. times been mistaken and tradition proved true. N., Mrs. Charles`Arthur and Mas Florence Harris. After the degrees had been conferred a very en- joyable social hour was spent. This was followed by a dainty lunch, which had more than ordinary sig- nificance. A huge birthday cake stood in the centre of the hall dec- orated with plnk and green icing, emblematic of the Order. The cake was in honor of Sister Eva Godkin, past Noble Grand, whose birthday it was. Mrs. Godkin cut the cake with a knife deoorted with pink and green ribbon and nearly on me members found limo sou- ,venirs in their piece. After 'the ers, R.
