A- cessarily a man cais in a laboratory. may farmer working with a dairy, -- working so skilfully that he ie every possible cent of profit fr her and prevents every loss that b ` prevented. ‘ “The facts about cow yahoo which we have discovered are astoun- ding," said F. U. =Whitoly, olnlie Dominion Dairy Division. _' "We find that many s dairymmss keeping a free boarding-house fb is cows. In a great number of 61:31:11 cases he is farming* at s loss le ry year-and doeen't know it!" ' These statements are verilkd'f`»by reports in Mr Whitely‘s office. In Oxford County a certain man gas a herd of eleven »cows. In tw ve months they averaged 3,123 pounds of milk each. At the local niafgket price this output was wortll'.2&36 for each cow, which consumed 38 worth of food durlngthe some t c. Each cow, therefore _ averaged e s oi exactly $9.64 ior'iihe‘- year, not _counting labor of feeding and '@11- dance or rent of buildings and Soo s. these would increase actual lossto a total of $20 per cow. 5 _ 1 On another farm in the same ‘is- 'trlct eighteen cows, kept hy~_ er man, gave an average ol ’[,206‘pb'iinds of milk eaoll in _thc some year. At _ the prevailing market price this out- put was worth $76.38 per cow. The 1value of the food consumed by each cow was calculated at $41.20. So this man meds a profit of $35.18 on such cow. Compare these herds by results! The diilerence in annual yield per cow ‘-in profits-is thus $44.82; or_near- ly thc price oi il good grade cow But the difierencs ineniis more than the figures will at first convey. Had the former dairyman sold his feed and done none of the exacting work of dairying ha would have been $106.04 ahead of the deal, not considering the fertilizer he gained by keeping stock. Had he kept as good cows as his neighbor he would have been nearly $500 richer, and this would hnve hecn clear profit. r--- “No\v why did this difference exist? "continued Mr Whitely. “These men g k rew the same ind of feed, lived in e some locality, and exactly the some conditions surrounded them both. They had equal chances oi’ mak- ing good, but one_ of them foiled even to make ends meet. The whole question is one _of selection.
