Poilion of that village had actually seen and been at- | tacked by a John Fisher, a resident of the same village, and who 1s an oyster grower and a planter, partially cor- roborated Poillon’s story. Poillon, his son, and Fisher, were standing on the beach of | the lower bay on Thursday afternoon when | they discovered what appeared to them tole SEA serpent. a large log or spar, which was apparently | floating with the tide and coming from the direction of the Q sarantine Islande. . . | Fisher first took a boat and started out to see what the thing was. After he had got | near to Poillen and the boy noticed that he | ; | hastily pulled back to the beach, using quick strokes. When he reached the shore, however. he asked the other two to accom pany hin back to take a look at the thing in the water. He then thought it must be a moaster fin-back shark. The sun had gone down, and it was growing dark when the three again overtook the strangs ol ject, which, by that time, had g gone fur- ther away, moving faster than “the tide would carry it, Oa coming up with the object of their pursuit a second time, one of the party m the boats shipped his cars in a noisy man- ner, when something arose from the water only a yard from their boat. It looked like a long, black and thick neck, with a head just about as large as a powder keyg. Whether it had eyes as big asa saucer, ora mouth as broad as a bandbox, or teeth like butcher's skewers, or tufts of hair on the back of ita neck, the three scered boatmen could not declare to a reporter who found them at their homes Mr. Poillon, however, exhibited an oar, the blade of which was crunched in hali lengthwise. This, it was declared, was done by the marine monster whipping its head around suddenly and biting the oar when one of the party attempted to hit it on the head with that implement. All of them agree that the crunching of the oar between the teeth of the serpent was posi- tively heard by them, and more positively reslized in the effect on their nerves. The monster then dropped its head into the water, and, with an undulating motion it speedily vanished. They believe it to be about twenty-five feet long, and regret very much that the approach of darkness prevented them from capturing it. Messrs. Fisher and Poillon, when accused by their neighbors of inventing the above story, went before a local Justica of the Peace, it is said, and made affidavit to the facts sub- stantially as given above. a. i> -<—— Picture of a Dakota Blizzard. RESEMBLING A SOLID WALL OF APPROACHED A TOWN, A Dakota paper gives the following ‘de- scription of the approach of the recent blizzard:—** Until about 4.15 p. m. the day was sunny, pleasant, and with a tempera- ture as mild as spring. The streets were filled with people, and ladies were prom- —_—— ICE aS If enading in the enjoyment of the ethereal mildness. Suddenly, and without the slightest warning, a solid white wall of frost and snow appeared in the northwest. It seemed as though the bluff in that direction had suddenly shot upward to a height of 1,000 feet, so solid and compact did this icy wall appear. In a second of time the storm burst with appalling fury, and the windows, which had by the mildness of the atmosphere become clear of frost, were heavily coated with clinging smow on the outside and heavy frosted particles on the inside. The air grew terribly cold, and was darkened by flying frost and snow. The high walls of the hotel directly opposite were not to be seen. All objects were hidden by the flying and rapidly driven snow. People on the streets sought shelter, and the stores were temporarily used for protection from the fierceness of the howling blast. Darker grew the atmosphere, to such an extent that business in the office was stopped until lights were procured.” a oo Special Notices. , PrRowsge’s. [ml], New Hars just opened at L, E.
