MacCALLUM The community of Carleton Sid- ing where he lived; the commun- ity of Borden where he worked and the district of Milton where he was born were severely shock- ed by the announcement that A- valah A. MacCallum had passed away at the P.E.I. Hospital. ‘Avalah and his wife were criti- cally injured in a car ccident» on the highway at York, P.E.I. They were rushed to hospital by ambulance. For ten days .or more medical reports stated —— Im- provement! Improvement! Then horror of horrors Avalah was gone. Avalah was well known throughout the Island and for ob- vious reasons. He was working for the C.N.R. at the time of his death. and had been for many years. He was an Orangeman, an Or- angeman who went-all the way from Master in his Primary Lodge to Grand Master. of P.E.I.. He would say that in climbing the ladder “Lady Luck” smiled fav- ourably upon’ him. Those of us who knew him know only too well that he reached the top by and only by his tremendous work in and zeal for the Orange Associa- tion. He was doing work in Cen- tral Queen’s Co. for the order at the time of the accident. As Grand Master he visited every Primary Lodge in the jur- isdiction at least once; several of them more than once. He visit- ed District and County Lodges "Chairman of the Grand Orange Lodge Executive he was respect- ed for his ability andloved for his disposition. Avalah was an active member of Cape.Traverse United Church. He worked with the Sunday School and Bible Class. He was a member of the choir, and a member of the Board of Stew- ards and Trustees. ' A number of years ago he was an active member of Zion Pres- byterian Church, Charlottetown. He transferred by certificate to the Cape Traverse United Church when he went to work at Bor- den. The church tor Avalah was the home of his 59111. the altar of his devotion, the hearth of his faith and the centre‘ of his affec- tion. He wouldn’t miss a service less he injure its good name, les- sen its power, discourage its members and chill his own soul. In community affairs Avalah was always in the thick of it, working like a trojan. His fav- ourite projects were the local school of which he was a Board member and Temperance. It was through his influence that an Al- coholism Anonymous groups was started at Borden. With the passing of Avalah A. MacCallum, P.E.I. has‘lo'st a prominent layman, a man who walked uprightly before _me_n.and humbly before God. . . MacPHERSON* Friends, relatives and acquain- tances in Culloden, P.E.I. and Melville, P.E.I. ‘were shocked and saddened to learn of the sud-, den passing of John Daniel Mac- Pherson which occurred at his home in Melville onythe morning of February 10, 1958. Mr. MalcPherson was the son of Norman and Sarah Dougher- ty MacPherson born at Dundee, P.E.I., October 29th, 1879. After having been in U.S.A. for a few years he returned to P.E..I. where he resided for the rest of his life farming and at times working at his tr ade in house painting. He was a friendly neighbor and always ready" to give a helping hand. He was twice married first‘, to Jessie, Nicholson, who predeceas- ed him some years ago to this marriage there was born one dau- ghter, Dorothy who predeceased him eight years ago.. Two sons surviving, Clifford of Braintree, Mass., and Stanley of Nalzlok, Mass. He is also survived by his wife, formerly Jennie Hare rls. Four Isisters Christie, Charlotte.- town; Fllloiienoe, Mrs. Thomas Young and Emma, Mrs. George Crane. of Cambridge, Mass.; and Nora, Mrs. Char1es‘Mac_Leod Arlington, Mass.; three brothers, Thomas and Roderick of Culle- den, P._E..I. and William, New Hampshire survive. On Thursday, February. 13th, funeral service was held in Wood Island Presbyterian Church con- ducted by the Rev. Donald Nich- olson. DOIRON There. passed away in the Charlottetown Hospital on Decem- ber 27th, 1957, John L. Doiron of North Rustico, in his 65th year. Although in poor health for the last four years of his life he never was heard to complain. He always had a cheerful smile and a friendly Sheeting for every one. One day before his death he was obliged to enter the Char- lottetown Hospital where all that could be done by the kind sisters, doctors and nurses to ease his sufferings but God willed other- wise and he passed peacefully away. Left to mourn the loss of a kind and loving husband are his wife and one daughter, Joan, his father Stanos Doiron, four sisters, Mrs. Amos Blacquiere, Mrs. Cla- ra Gallant, Mrs. Clarence Gallant and Mrs. Donald Gallant; also three brothers, Jimmy, Wliltiie and Edgar. Requiem High Mass was cele- brated by his pastor, Rev. Leo- nard Ayers. Members of the Canadian Le gion of which the deceased was a charted member attended in a body the Legion graveside Ser. vice was conducted by President, Murray Cassiday. Last Post and Reveille were sounded by Bugler David Mills. The rail bearers were: Francis Gallant,lAylre Gallant, James C, Blacquiere, John Doiron, P. C. Martin and Milton Green.
