Burgess) FUN AND MISCIIIEF The more temptation you resist, Somehow the more it will persist. -Old Mother Nature. Mother Bear": two impx, and all the neighbors said they really were imps, were scrambling down from the top of a tall tree where Mother Bear had told them to ltay until she returned. They had forgotten all about that. Liv.- tie Bears and little boys and girls are very much alike in the short- ness of their memories. They didn't mean to disobey. No, air. they didn't mean to disobey at all. They were just so full of curiosity and excitement that there wasn't any room for mem- ory. From the top of that tree they had discovered Farmer Brown's sugar house only a little way off. Never before in their short live: had they ever seen anything at all like this. They just had to have a closer look at it; to try to find out all about it. They just had to. They were in such I hurry that they didn't wait 10 climb all the way down to the ground. When they were almost there. they just let go and dropped. It was sis- her who led the way. She was a little bit the boldest and little bit more curious. By and by they reached I lit- tle opcninig among the trees where the sugar house was. At the edge of the opening they stop- ped. They pressed close together. 3 little bit; scared as they stared and stared. Then they both stood up on their hind feet as only Beam and human folk can. They moved forward a bit, then stood up and stared again. Over back of the sugar house Jumper the Hare thumped with his hind feet as only he and Peter Rabbit can. The cubs oouldn't see him and didn't know what the sound was. They turned and scampered back into the woods as fast as their little legs could take them. Presently they were back again. They would take I few steps. stop and stare. then I few steps more, only to stop again. So little by little they drew nearer and nearer to the sugar house. Of :-ource nothing happened. No one was there. so nothing could hap- pen. After it while they reached the sugar house. It was a. small house. There were cracks be- tween the boards. Instead of be- ing put on close together a small fwpace had been left between the boards. This was to allow the steam to r-scape when sap was be- ing boiicd. it also allowed a lovely smell to come out, the xvii;-ii of maple sgsriip and maple sugar. it was a swcct smell. it was especially sweet to two Sniffy lllil-ie noses that moved from crack to crack. "M-minm." sairl one little bear. "M-m-inm," said the other lit- tlir bear. They went. from crack to ciack all around that sugar house, sniff- ing and sniffing. That sweet smell was faint because it was long since the syrup and sugar were miidc, but it was strong enough to set two little tongues Io licking lips. Never had those small boars smellcri anything quite to good. Never had they wanted an;-thinr: quite so much. The door of the sugar house was cln.-ed and locked. They climb- ed back on the roof. They chased each other around. Finally sis- ter found a couple of loose shin- gles and pulled. them out. it was a long time since that roof had been shingled, and there were other shingles a little loose. The little black imps began huntinvg for loose shingles and pulling them out. This was fun. Also. it was mischief. But the little Bears didn't know this. Everything is not always what it seems in these games! "Fancy" bids are by no means rare, and this may be rather hard on those players who are accustomed to more "honest" bidding.
