During the week the 92 oi- fices reported that they had refer- red 4,939 persons to regular eni- posltioiis, and that 4.129 of these had received employment. This re- presents an increase of 1,026 as compared with the previous week when 3,103 persons were placed. In addition 954 casual jobs were sup- plied as compared with 1,027 dur ing the week eiitle'.'i`Decem»I.\er 27th. The placements for the week were distributed as follows: Prince Ed- ward lsiand. ill; Nova Scotia, 115; New Brunswick, 147; Quebec, 328; Ontiirio, 1454; Manitoba, 502; Sask- ' atehewan, 377; Alberta, 493; Bri- tish Colnni-bi;\, 700. During the_\\'eek 12.140 appli- cants were registered. of whom 504 were women and 11.636 were men. This represents an increase of 3,- 068 in registration when compared with the 9,072 applicants of the preceding week. This increase may be attributed largely to the re- glstrarioit of returned men in con- nection with the Federal Emer- gency Appropriation Act. The iiuin- ber of vacancies notified by ein- ployers dttring the week totalled 4,699, of which 711 were for women workers and 3,988 were for ineil. You will observe that we_ have ' succeeded to make revenues and expenditures meet and have a balance to the good. My work at the Council Board is well kno_wn to most of the tax payers of the city' and I think that I may fairly assume that the result of my work meets with the approval of the majority of the citizens. , Many of my friends believe that I am en- titled to the position on account of my length of. service to the city, having served for a greater length of time than any. member of the ouncil Board and have performed the duties of my office in a fair and eilicient manner since becoming a member of the Council. ‘ ‘ If you do me the honor of election there will be nothing negative with regard to my policy for the forth coming term. I will use every effort to promote all and every good work undertaken by the Council for the general welfare and bet- terment of the city. HALIFAX, Feb. 3.-Yesterday morning -the seismograpli at Dul- housle University recorded an earthquake, which was registered at about the some time as that re- ported at Washingtoii. The shack lasted one hour and fittyniinutes and it was a bettei' record than the one obtained of the recent earth- quake in Mexico. which occurred several weeks ago. It was 7.45 a. m. when the seis- mograph first recorded' the shock, which seemed to come from the West of South or Central America. Taking consideration the difference intime, between Halifax and Wash- ington, and also .the time required for the shock to travel the distance separating the two .cities, ~the ln- strtiment at Dalhousie recorded the same time that the George- town Universigy did. In the-Wash- `ington depatc it was stated that the earthquake was centred from 3300 to 3800 miles from that city. therefore it must have been an ad- ditional eight hundred miles or more from Halifax. -,I im _ ,_ _ woo ntounh -thehootheailng. nothing and zlfoo- tive preparation for Kidney and lind- der troubles yet produced. As far as lay in my power I have always worked in the best interests of the City in general and Ward five in particular, bearing im mind that our city finances will not allow of permanent streets all over the City, at least for some years to come, I em in favor of opening the City gravel .pit at Surrey to procure material to Improve our clay streets I also favor the Dominion housing scheme, providing it does not lm- pose additional burden on our city finuiiees. Ladies and Gentlemen:--For three consecutive terms you hnve done me the honor of electing me as one of your representatives at the Council Board, and now in ob- edience to a general request, I glad- ly comrply with your wishes to nominate again, and take this means of soliciting your support on the 11th Inst. . The Ballot Act was framed for the protection of the voter. I have always respected it by retraining from a personal canvass. Much as has been done for the Ward during the last few years. much remains to be done. and to accomplish It In part without ln- volvlng the city I submit: 1. The Gravel Pit at Surrey, own- ed by the city. MUST be opened tip, for It contains In abundance the material required on our streets, and quite within the means of the civic finances. - 2. The Dominion Housing scheme shoulll be -taken up at once with the Provincial Government, for the housing problem is becoming eer- lous in Charlottetown. ` 3.
