New ms' , .3 _ StockExc/lange, NEW YORK, April 21-Areord- ing to Dow Jones gold shares are firmer in London this morning but industriwls have been maimed down due to the Proposals of Cnhmbey-_ lain concerning taxes. Camegle Illinois Steel has announced that third Quarter steel prces will re. main unchanged. The president 01 Phelps Dodge said yesterday he mcught domestic copper prices were stabilized between 14 cents and 15 cents. Most of the first Quarter statements continue good, Y°““€S*»°W11 Sheet and Tube sans B-Sainst $114. General Electric 40 @6106 wainst 35 cents. Commer- cial Credit $1.72 against $1.64. President Roosevelt's budget meg. D/8° was about in line with expec. tations. We would look for an lr- l‘B€l1lar market today. MARKET BULLETIN J ,__ ' ‘ __`_ ~ MORNING LETTER Disregarding lower prices abroad, the stock market made a very favorable showing yesterday morn- ing with prices showing a fair measure of buoyancy in the first two hours of trading and holding relatively well throughout the afternoon. Profit taking was en- countered toward the end oi' the day but these offerings appeared to be absorbed easily as a group. The Rails again made a good showing. The Farm and Agricul- tural equipment issues moved up easily and there wo.; a good de. mand for numerous chemical stocks. The Copper group was forced to contend with further weakness in the metal abroad and a mark down to 14 1-2 cents in the domestic price because of the great speculative activity in copper abroad in the past six months. It is difficult to judge the near term course of foreign prices particular- ly if the threat of war in Europe moderates, but there are indications of a substantial demand contin- uing in the United States market which, at present, is protected by I four cent tariff. This evidentially explains the comparatively better market action of the copper stocks most favorably placed wi-th low cost domestic production. The response to the budget message was negative probabl due to the fact that it contained/ no- thing of a surprising nature. Some encouragement was derived from the indications that no new taxes will be sought at the present time. Tile market as a whole appears to us to indicate a further recovery over the near term.
