I Most of those who did attend} were Board members, members! of the medical and nursing staff, representatives of various hospital organizations, and clergymen, with only a few interested citizens comprising the balance. Judge W.E. Darby, president of the Board of Trustees, and later re-elected to this office, presided. The work of the hospital was reflected in the detailed reports presented by the chairmen of the various committees, hospital Ladies Aids, and the Okto Club. DEFICIT REDUCED In his presidential report, Judge Darby noted that during the past three years there was a reduction in the recurring annual deficits. These reductions he said had been achieved only by the exercise of every reasonable economy, in conjunction with generous support through Century Club and mem- bership drive contributions. The report of the former admin- istrator, John E. Ledgerwood, revealed an average daily oc- cupancy of 72 adults and children, 13 new born. During the year 3,- 284 patients were admitted to hos-. pital and 2,887 out-patients recei- ved emergency or diagnostic tratment. In the maternity service, 7235 new borns were cared for. A to tal of 115,412 meals were served A four-year sentence in Dor- chester Penitentiary was impos- ed on Patrick Victor Maclnnis of Borden yesterday after a jury found him guilty of an attempt- ed break at the Retail Venda-rs store in Borden on November 15, 1957 Before sentence was passed by Mr. Justice George J. Tweedy, the Crown, represented by Mr. D.O. Stewa-rt Q.C. called ‘atten- tion to 15 convictions, 13 for theft, that have been found a- gainst the 37-year-old prisoner, who has previously received four penitentiary sentences ranging from two to five years. He ask- ed the court to consider impos- ing-a sentence of preventative detention in the interest of pub- lic protection because the record of the accused indicated the will to reform was lacking and he had become an habitual crim- inal. *. Judge Tweedy referred to the request of the defence counsel, Mr. George MacMahon, for con- sideration of the jury’s request for mercy in“ their verdict of conviction. and noted, that the jury had not been informed at any time concerning t-he prev- ious record of convictions a- gainst the accused. He said he would act on the Crown’s sug- gestion, if Mr. Stewart wished to make a motion to the court concerning the additional sent- enct of preventative detention,. However the Crown, moved in- Judige Darloy Re-Elected P. C. Hospital President to patients and staff. In addition, 1,379 operations were performed. and days of patient care totalled 32,500. During the year 38 student nur- ses were enrolled for training, and $60,000 in goods and services pur- chased from local Island business and a staff of 139 were employed The meeting approved a reso- lution amending the by—laws to permit the total number of trustees to be increased to five. one of whom must be a member of the medical staff. The Board of Trustees will thus have two members of the medical staff serving on it. Judge Darby was re-elected president of the Board. ther officers elected included: arry T. Holman, lst vice-president; A. P. Mulligan, 2nd'vice-presi- dent; and J .M. Logan, secretary- reasurer. Trustees elected to serve a three-year term were: J. F. Arnett, Lorne Driscoll, R. S. Hinton, Wilfred Kelly, Dave Miller, all of Surrunerside; Ralph Callbeck, Central Bedeque; Mar- tin DesRoches, Miscouche; Ralph Monkley, Lot 16; Eric Robinson, Albany; Wilfred Shea, Tignish; Aden Mulligan, Kin- kora; Eric Jessome, Margate. Robert Jardine of Freetown was elected to the Board for a two-year term completing the vacancy resulting from the resig- nation of former Board member and president, Mr. A. A. Scales. Four-Yyear Sentence ls Given In Attempted Break Case stead, to request the maximum sentence normally imposed for the offence. Judge Tweedy, in passing sen- tence oii the prisoner said that no one felt worse than he did at having to take away a man's liberty, but he noted the failure‘ of the prisoner to heed the many previous warnings that other courts had made to him and in view of this he had doubts re- formation of the prisoner through a lesser sentence and he sug- gested that the attorney Gener- al’s Department should see if they could find some means to have him see the advantage of living a law abiding life. Before his char.ge to the jury Judge Tweedy paid high tribute to the defence counsel, Mr. Mac- Mahon, who was conducting his first jury case, stating that his conduct of the case is in keep- ing with the highest traditions of the-Bar and would do credit to an older and more experienc ed member of the Bar. Judge Tweedy said Mr. Mac- Mah~on’s client certainly had not suffered from his conduct of the case and he quoted an incident in his own life when a young lawyer, when he stated that late Chief Justice Matheson once said to him” There's always room at the top.” Judge Tweedy said, I repeat those words to you Mr. Mac- Mahon, “there’s always room at the top."
