B:, had a narrow escape from being burned to death on Friday afternoon. Shortly before noon, while she was lifting a cover off the cooking stove, the fire shot np and ignited the sieeve of her dress. The entire dress was eoon envel>ped in flames, and Mrs. Segee was in a terrible state of excitement. The explosion wrecked the building. A despatch to the London Times from Caye‘own says that the rinderpest bad broken out in Aliwell North and Bargers- dorp, and that there was every prospect that it would sweepthe colony to the coast. His Grace Archbishop Williams, who contemplates @ two months’ visit to Pope Leo XIII. at Rome, left Boston for New York on Wednesday afternoon. The in- cident was made the occasion ef an inter- esting ceremony at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross. One of the most pathetic scenes since the flood took place at Natchez, Miss., on Wednesday. Thirty negroes drifting on a raft were landed there, having been float- ing for four days with nothing to eat. No sooner had they reached land than they felldowy and worshipped it. A colored Baptist preacher near by offered his ser- vices and began at once to baptize the whole crowd. They refused to eat or leave the river baak until baptism was completed. They said the flood was a visitation of the Divine wrath. A Bombay cable despatch to the New York Herald says: The plague continues to diminish in Bombay, having fallen to 15 cases daily. It is diminishing algo at Poona and Kurachgee. New plague have been formed at Damoun, Untch and Mandin. The cases at Bombay hi ve been too few for Dr. Yerain to cun- tinue his experimesots.
