ITALIAN TYPHOID SENT BY GER-
MANS.
LONDON, Aug. 14.--News of two
German outrages against Italy, occur-
ing before she declared war agaiiist
Austria. have just reached the British
Government.
Soon after war was dcclsrcd a sev-
ere epidamic of typhoid broke out
among italian troops serving in the
north. lt was estimated that the cases
amounted to 37.000 and the authorities
were at their wits' end to discover thc
cause. Not only had the men boon
inoculated but the work of the Italian
sanitary corps is considered equal to
that of any in the world.
The mystery has now been solved.
lt appears that the serum wherewith
the men was inoculated was manufac
tured at a laboratory at Berne, in
Switzerland. The Italian Government
has discovered that the chemists who
manufactured it were all Germans.
They made the serum between four
and five times as strong as it ought to
have been. Consequently the results
were positive instead of negative and
the soldiers left for the front sickening
from typhoid.
In the other instance the Italian
Government sent agents all over
France to buy for remounts all horses
not needed or rejected by the French.
Two oi* three days after the horses
arrived it was found that more than
1,000 had sore backs. Fresh brands
were found under the saddles. After
having been ridden for a couple of
days the .animals were unfit for ser-
vice.

Judging holds of grain for compe-
titive purposea easily convinces that
good farming pays. The more uniform
and vigorous fields were those where
carefully selected seed was sown, or
where the progeny from hand-selected
seed was used. Most of the croDS
were good, n few were poor and many
were excellent. Cultivation is ne-
cessary and but .few yer know how
best to treat the land in order that
maximum yields may ho obtaliicd and
at the same time kill the weeds; it
takes many years to create ideal con-
ditions. Many farms are a. credit to
the~owner and to the Island. A good
crop looks much better on a well-
kept farm than on one where weeds
grow around the roads, fences and
harris and where everything appears
untidy; there needs to be s. balance.
A few treated oats for smut with ex-
cellent results. The sea'son was fav-
ourable for ii heavy growth oi' sow
thistle and but few fields escaped thc
ravages. The escape of the few was
due to either very careful cultivation
or the breaking of old pastures. The

Notwithstanding the fact that WAR is the first
thought of the people of this Country today, yet the
question of production is at the same time to be con-
sidered in connection with WAR.
The Agricultural and Live Stock people are being
urged to make .this a year of production, and in this
connection the Manufacturers also play an important
part. _
In order to know what is being produced in the
Maritime Provinces, the Exhibition Associations are
continuing their work, in order that the Agricultural
and Industrial people may show what is being done.
At the Provincial Exhibition at Halifax- is the
greatest and best opportunity to make this display of
production, and we are looking to see this 'one of the
best ever put on at this Fair.
The amusement _end will not be neglected, and
consequently combining the two, we promise our
patrons the best hair yet held on our Grounds.
